About Government College for Women, Srinagar
Srinagar, which is the capital city of the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J & K), has a Government College for Women. This was founded back in the year 1950. As the name suggests, this one is meant only for female students. The total campus runs to a little over eight acres of land. The Government College for Women, Srinagar (GCWS) is affiliated to the University of Kashmir (KU), also located in Srinagar. This affiliation, ensures the approval by the UGC (University Grants Commission). The GCWS was earlier known as the Women’s College Srinagar. The GCWS has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it.
A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. This college has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps). The Government College for Women, Srinagar is also the EDUSAT Hub for the entire state of J & K.
The GCWS runs courses at both the UG as well as PG levels. At the under- grad level, there is the BA which can be taken up as a pass options or for English Honours. There is also the professional course of the BCA. The BSc. may be taken up with the Medical specialization with a focus on the PCB or Physics, Chemistry and Biology. An MA can be taken up in two areas. These are in English and for Human Development. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for girls. Banking facilities with ATMs, access to public transport and convenience stores may all be availed from just outside the college campus. There is a sports field where outdoor games may be played in. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. There are adequate IT internet facilities on campus. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is served at the college cafeteria. There is a rich alumni association at this college, tapping in to the luminaries who’ve studied here, over the years.

The Library has subscribed to N-LIST database of INFLIBNET which is an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and is giving access to around 6,000+ Journals and 31,35,000 e-books especially meant for Colleges. The college Library has also registered itself to National Digital Library of India (NDL) an open-access platform for e-books and e-journals, video lectures, etc.
