Government Polytechnic, Rajkot was established by the Government of Gujarat in June 1964, with an initial intake of 60 students in the civil engineering Diploma Course. The Polytechnic was initially located in Rajkot, but a new and fully equipped building was constructed in 1966 on a hillock near Aji Dam, a green, lush surrounding ideal for academics. This place is about 6 km away from the railway station. 

Government Polytechnic, Rajkot is an affiliated college of Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad. Rajkot is a well-known industrial city in Gujarat state, famous for its diesel engine industries throughout India. It is situated on the Bombay-Okha broad gauge line of Western Railway and 8B national highway. The leading industries in the city are Field Marshal, K. Rasiklal & Co., Echjay Steel, Forge & Forge Pvt.
