About College:

The Holy Cross College (HCC) is one of the oldest colleges in India, modelled on western lines. This is especially true for girls’ higher education. The oldest branch of the Holy Cross College is in the city of Tiruchirappalli, which is in the state of Tamil Nadu. This was established, back in 1923. The history of the establishment though goes back to even earlier a time. Mother Sophie, the founder, started off with a primary school in the same city, in 1901, just at the start of the century. When the college was established, it was almost a revolution to enable girls towards higher education. The Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, is behind this college’s administration and setup. This society is headquartered in the town of Puthur, part of the Tiruchirappalli district itself. Another college was set up by the same society in the town of Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, also in Tamil Nadu.

The Tiruchirappalli- based Holy Cross College is affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, also from the same city. This affiliation, ensures its approval from the UGC (University Grants Commission). It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an A grade rating. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The college has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps).

Courses are offered here at the right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, there are courses from the arts, sciences, commerce and in management. For commerce students, the option is for a B. Com. Management students may got for a BBA. There are a number of options for the science students, with BSc. courses available for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology, Economics, Rehabilitation Science, Visual Communication, Bio Technology and in Bio Chemistry. The option for BCA also exists. For the arts students, BA courses are available for English, Tamil and in History. A special course is also on for the area of Audio and Speech- Language Pathology. Most of these courses may also be taken up at the master’s level. In addition, there is now the MSW (Masters in Social Work) programme. There is also the MLIS or Masters in Library and Information Science.

Some courses may be self- financed, while others are aided. A few post graduate diploma programmes are also available here. Working professionally particularly find this mode convenient. They are on here for the areas of- Computer Applications, Bio Informatics, Rural Management and for Medical Laboratory Technology. Some diplomas may also be availed from here, in the fields of Computer Application, Medical Laboratory Technology and for Special Education Mental Retardation. These may be taken up immediately after school leaving. The duration of the courses may vary depending on the timeline needed. Some certifications and special courses can also be pursued. Sometimes, the enrolled students take them up on add- on basis. At other times, it is external ones who come for these. The UGC has curated some add- on career- oriented courses for this college. They are for the areas of- Journalism, NGO Management, Event Management, Soft Skills & Communication and in TV & Video Production.

Research is also given top priority here at the HCC in Tamil Nadu. The college has filed in several patents and even been granted on quite a few of these. It takes up consulting assignments from the government and industry bodies. The HCC also imparts industrial training to such clients in the manufacturing space. A digitally powered knowledge depository is maintained here, that goes by the name of D- Space. Regular seminars and workshops are also held on campus. The faculty members here have been published on some of the best recognized peer- reviewed academic journals. The HCC is also now actively promoting the doctoral programmes here. Several projects have been sourced from other agencies such as- the DBT (Department of Bio Technology), UGC and the Loyola College.

Another area of much importance to the institute is entrepreneurship. This is why the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) has been an active forum here. It helps develop the budding entrepreneurs among the students for the institute. Experienced trainers and entrepreneurs are invited to campus to deliver guest lectures and interact with those who have such business models. All this has led to much recognition by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) which in the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) has placed the HCC at rank 26th within the category for colleges.
