Lady Brabourne College is one of India's premier institutions for women's education with its lush green lawns and gardens facing the Park Circus Maidan. The College was established by the Government of Bengal in July 1939 and named after Lord Brabourne's wife, who served as Governor of Bengal from February 1939 to July 1939. Lady Brabourne College began with 35 Muslim students and 9 faculty members in a rented house in Park Circus. Sir J. Woodhead, the then Governor of Bengal, laid the foundation stone for the building way back in August 26,1939. The college was ranked 94th by the NIRF in the year 2020 in the college category.
The College had 50% reserved seats for Muslim women and the rest for other communities including Hindu, Parsee, Sikh, Jains. The hostel facility was kept exclusively for Muslim students. Lady Brabourne College started admitting Hindu students due to a shortage of Muslim applicants.
Lady Brabourne College has grown structurally and academically, gaining a reputation as a top academic institution. The College offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in disciplines of Science and Arts to its students. Lady Brabourne College offers NSS clubs to its students. NSS or National Social Services is a Youth Programme which is established under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The college was built long ago and thus has a British outlook. The facilities of the college are, however, not up-to-date. The classrooms are not really equipped with the latest infrastructure and have old-style tables and chairs. The library is great, however, the Wi-Fi does not work. The living spaces were not really that clean.
Lady Brabourne College is KNOWN for the Microbio and Economics departments and very rightfully so. The labs have adequate machines. Most of the classrooms have AC and projectors. Free Wifi is accessible. Hostel providence for students from distant places. 3 canteens with various choices(all of them are nice). Lovely fests and events too.
Since it is a government college the infrastructure is not upto the mark. Smart boards were not available and the benches were also not properly polished , the classes are not well maintained but the rooms are large and cool as well
