Shivaji College was established in 1961 by the renowned social activist and farmer-leader, Honourable Dr Panjab Rao Deshmukh. The institute is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. Shivaji College is a co-educational institution offering different undergraduate courses in BA, BSc, BCom and provides MA courses in Hindi, Sanskrit, Political Science. Shivaji College was accredited with a grade ‘A’ by NAAC. Shivaji College in DU was taken over by the Delhi Government in 1967 and relocated to Karampura. Shivaji college was further shifted to its present campus in Raja Garden in 1976. According to NIRF rankings 2021, Shivaji College has been ranked 70th in the college category. In 2020, the college was ranked 51st in NIRF college rankings.

As per the Shivaji College admission criteria, admission to the UG courses are based on the merit of the class 12th board examination, and where the Shivaji College releases the cut off and the students who clear the cut off are offered admissions in the institute. For Shivaji College PG courses admissions, 50% of seats will be filled through the entrance exam conducted by DU and the rest 50% will be based on the merit of the qualifying exam. Only Delhi University students can get merit-based admission and the other students who belong to other universities have to appear for the DUET entrance exam.
