St Joseph's College of Commerce, Bangalore was established in 1882, as an educational initiative by the French foreign mission Fathers. The UGC granted SJCC autonomy status in 2005, awarded an ‘A’ grade in 2007, and acknowledged as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ in 2010. In 2023, SJCC Bangalore was placed 65th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

It became an autonomous institution in October 2004 and is affiliated with Bangalore University, Bangalore. The institution provides higher education in streams of Arts and Humanities, Commerce, Marketing, Sciences, Management and Business Administration and Economics. The college invites admission in various degree and diploma programmes, offered in full-time mode. St Joseph's College of Commerce, Bangalore accepts admission for courses like BA (H) English, BBA, B.Com, B.Com (H), B.Sc (H) Economics, PGD and M.Com. The admission depends on the merit of the applicant. For some courses, the relevant department takes entrance exams and applicants are accepted as per the score received. 

SJCC Bangalore also has a placement cell that provides career counselling, training and placement services to students from different programmes. The cell encourages the students to pursue internships as well as participate in placement drives, and off-campus recruitments. SJCC Bangalore provides facilities for the convenience of students. The facilities are a library, gym, sports facilities laboratories, cafeteria auditorium, parking and other facilities.
