The Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay School of English and Foreign Languages Studies, Silchar as one of the premier constituent colleges of Assam University. With a full-fledged array of language programs-their offerings include English, Arabic, and French-the school is responsible for admitting eligible candidates for said programs through a rigorous merit-based admission procedure. The courses offered span postgraduate, research and diploma levels-13 in total. The admissions cycle, which usually coincides with the beginning of the academic session (that is in August-September), is expected to attract more applicants. Minimum qualification to take admission in a master's program is graduation from any recognized university in the relevant subject. 

Application Process

The typical processes for application to the Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay School of English and Foreign Languages Studies are as follows:

1. Visit the official website of Assam University and click at the admissions link.

2. Download and fill the application form for the concerned program. Be certain that all details have been accurately filled out.

3. Obtain all required documents, which may include:

  • Degree certificates and mark sheets of previous qualifications.
  • Valid ID proof.
  • Recent passport-size photographs.
  • Caste certificate (if applicable).
  • Any other relevant certificates/documents as stated in the application guidelines.

4. The duly filled application form along with the relevant documents should reach the university before the deadline mentioned. The forms can be submitted either through online service or through postal service as elaborated on the university website.

5. The application fees are to be paid in a prescribed mode of payment, the fee amount might vary with respect to different programs and categories of applicants.

6. For research programs like M.Phil and Ph.D., candidates may also be required to submit a research proposal along with their application.

7. Shortlisted candidates after screening of application forms shall be called for an entrance test and/or interviews, as applicable to the programs.

8. The final selection is mostly based on the academic performance of the candidate in the previous qualifications, the performance in the entrance test if any, and the performance in the interview (for research programs). 

9. Successful candidates will be informed through the announcement on the University website or emailed. They must carry out all the requisite steps of admission, along with verification of documents and payment of fees, within the stipulated time frame to confirm their admission.

Admission Process Degree wise 

MA Programs (English, Arabic, French): Admission to the MA Programs is vested on the merits of the candidates at the Bachelor's Degree Level in addition to the entrance test and even interview. Each of them consists of 62 for the MA English program, 31 for MA Arabic, and 20 for MA French; the degree should be in the language concerned or an allied subject.

M.Phil Programs (English, Arabic): The M.Phil programs have a tough selection process. There are 15 seats available in M.Phil Arabic. The applicant should possess a master's degree in the subject concerned with the percentage equivalent to the minimum stated by the University. The admission process may also incorporate an Entrance Test and Interview.

Ph.D Programs (English, Arabic, French): This program takes an entrance exam and then interviews. Candidates having a master's degree in the relevant subject with required minimum marks according to UGC norms will be considered for further advanced research programs in English, Arabic, and French under the Ph.D. programs.

Advanced Diploma and PG Diploma in French: The two programs, namely Advanced Diploma in French and Postgraduate Diploma in Proficiency in French, have an intake of 18 seats each. In case of more applicants, admission to these diploma courses may be through merit-based selection or through an entrance test. 

D.Litt Programs (English, Arabic, French): Entrance to the D. Litt programs that are the highest academic degrees awarded is extremely selective. Students must have completed their Ph.D and research work linking up with the field. Admission is awarded in the light of an evaluation of a candidate's research proposal and academic merit.
