    The Ph.D. programme at IISER Pune is a blend of classroom curriculum, mentoring undergraduate students along with a major research component. Members of Earth and Climate Science are engaged in cutting-edge research across diverse domains of Climate science and employing state-of-the-art lab instruments, theoretical models, and field techniques. The research focus of the department is to understand the natural processes that shape the Earth at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Research questions span over interacting spheres, from the deep earth study to atmospheric dynamics.

    The following are the main research domains of the department of Earth and Climate Science

    • Earth Structure and its Evolution (Topics: Geophysics, Seismology, Geodynamics, Mineralogy & Petrology Tectonics)
    • Surface Processes (Topics: Quantitative Geomorphology, Low Temperature Geochemistry)
    • Paleoenvironment and Paleoclimatic Evolution (Topics: Paleoclimatic reconstruction, Paleontology, Paleoecology & Biodiversity, Sedimentary basin analyses)
    • Climate Dynamics (Topics: Glaciology, Climate modelling)

    Eligibility Criteria

    1. Students with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or a CGPA 6 out of 10 point scale (55% in aggregate or equivalent CGPA for SC/ST and PD candidates) in Master’s (or BS-MS) degree in Geology/ Applied Geology/Physics/Mathematics/Atmospheric Science/Climate Science/Engineering/Biology/Environmental Science, or related subjects. BE/BTech students may also apply. A background in physics and maths at the undergraduate level is required for the climate and geophysics domains.
    2. Additionally, the candidate MUST have qualified in any ONE of the following exams:
    • National Eligibility Test (NET) with valid CSIR-JRF / UGC-JRF/ UGC-LS/ CSIR-LS/ or a valid GATE/JEST score,
    • INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (The candidate should be in possession of a provisional selection letter at the time of the interview), Or,
    • BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility criteria.

    Admission Details

    Based on application forms received, the above listed criteria, and additional criteria set by the Department, applicants will be shortlisted for interviews. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for admission to the program through a rigorous evaluation process involving two rounds of interviews by a selection committee.
