The Mathematics Department of IISER Pune includes strong research groups in all the core areas including Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry-Topology and Number Theory. The Ph.D. programme at IISER Pune is a blend of class room curriculum, mentoring under-graduate students along with a major research component. The research activities of this department span a wide range of deep and fundamental areas like algebraic and analytic number theory, automorphic forms, representation theory, finite groups, algebraic K-theory, partial and stochastic differential equations, several variable complex analysis, harmonic analysis, operator theory, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, low dimensional topology, cryptography, algorithms, coding theory, probability theory, mathematical finance and statistical modelling.

In the first two years, the student will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Upon the successful completion of the comprehensive examination and two years of JRF, the student will be eligible to receive a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for a maximum of another three years. The research progress of the student will be monitored on a yearly basis by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) involving the thesis supervisor (Convener) and two other faculty members. Upon completion of satisfactory research work (as construed by the RAC), the research scholar will deliver a research seminar regarding their work before the submission of thesis. The submitted thesis will be evaluated by external examiners before the conduct of viva-voce.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Students with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or an equivalent C.G.P.A on a 10-point scale (55% or an equivalent C.G.P.A in aggregate for SC,ST and PD candidates) in any Master’s degree or B.E., B. Tech. in related branches satisfying the above criteria of marks can apply.

2. Additionally, the candidate must satisfy any one of the following criteria:

Appeared for NBHM Ph.D. written exam in 2026 and has a D-score of 35 marks (28 marks for SC, ST and PD candidates).
Qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with valid* CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF in Mathematics or Computer Science and Applications with rank up to 300 for unreserved category and up to 375 for SC, ST and PD candidates.
Valid* GATE rank with rank up to 300 for unreserved category candidates, and up to 375 for SC, ST and PD candidates) in Mathematics or Computer Science and Information Technology.
Integrated BS-MS, MS (or MSc) in Mathematics from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a C.G.P.A more than or equal to 8 out of 10.

3. For all the national eligibility examinations which provide a common rank/score, the cut-off rank/score for shortlisting for the Interviews for the reserved categories shall be lowered to 1.25 times the General category rank/score.

Note: The scores/ranks MUST be valid at the time of admission. Candidates in the final year who haven’t received their marks, but will obtain them by the time of joining, can also apply.

Admission Details

Based on application forms received, the above listed criteria, and additional criteria set by the Department, applicants will be shortlisted for interviews. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for admission to the program through a rigorous evaluation process involving two rounds of interviews by a selection committee.
