GITAM Institute of Management (GIM) is located in the picturesque coastal city of Visakhapatnam, in the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP). Though this college was only established in the year 1988, its roots go back even farther back in time. It is a constituent unit within the GITAM University. A team of technocrats, academicians and philanthropists were behind this set up, back in the year 1980. It was then known as the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management. The name change occurred after GITAM was accorded Deemed University status by the UGC (University Grants Commission). GITAM has also set up two more campuses, in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with respective state- wise affiliations in them.
The Visakhapatnam campus covers a total of two- hundred and fifty- five acres’ worth of land. The GIM alone occupies ninety- seven acres of those. Further, the college has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A+ grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. GITAM also belongs to a select list of universities in India, which have been ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified.
GITAM is a key facilitator of a Ministry of HRD initiative with the World Bank. It is a programme titled TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme). GITAM has been extremely proactive when it comes to forging collaborative deals with educational institutions abroad. This helps in research collaboration, facilitating exchange programmes and generating consulting assignments. Such partners of the university are located all over the world, in the countries of the USA and Papua New Guinea. There is even a Directorate of Student Foreign Affairs (DSFA) to oversee such matters. Some of the prominent names among the partner institutes includes the likes of- University of Papua New Guinea, University of Nebraska Omaha and the Central Michigan University.
Some such linkages have also been developed with industry bodies, such as with HSBC and the CII (Confederation of Indian Industries). Individual courses have also received the blessings of its respective nodal bodies. The commerce and accounting courses for instance have met the approval of the NSE (National Stock Exchange), CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) and the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). Courses are available here, right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, one programme is the B. Com. Apart from this, a BBA may be taken up either in the general mode, where the first year sees all subjects being taught, or with a specialization right from the outset.
The BBA specializations are for the areas of- Logistics, Fin Tech, Business Analytics and in Management Accounting. An Integrated BBA plus MBA is also an option, with a part of the course being taken up in the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO). Likewise, at the master’s level, one can opt for an M. Com or for an MBA. This MBA may also be done with the HRM specialization. Some certificate and diploma courses may also be taken up. These may be taken up by the enrolled students as add- on courses, or by some external ones as well. They are primarily meant for working professionals, seeking a skill upgrade.
Diplomas are available here for the areas of Logistics & Supply Chain Management and in Risk & Insurance Management. Certificates may be availed for Business English, Basic English, Psychometrics, IELTS, Fin Tech, Digital Marketing Advanced English and for Logistics & Supply Chain Management. Some doctoral programmes may also be taken up here. Research too plays a crucial role in the development of the GITAM Institute of Management. For that purpose, the library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. Due to the industry- oriented nature of the academics here, the placements have also gone well. That is why leading corproates have recruited form the GIM.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college is easily accessible using public transport. A convenience store is also located within campus.
