The IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) was founded in the year 1997. It is the state government university of Punjab, for the purpose of professional courses. Initially it was named as the Punjab Technical University (PTU), before being renamed to its present avatar. It has been renamed after the former Prime Minister of India- Shri Inder Kumar Gujral. The main campus is located in the city of Jalandhar. The IKGPTU has been granted full university status, by the UGC (University Grants Commission). The technical courses here, have met the approval of the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).
The university also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The total campus area stretches over seventy- eight acres of land. While the main campus is in Jalandhar, there are extension centres all over the state of Punjab. These campuses are in the cities of- Kapurthala, Mohali, Hoshiarpur, Batala, Bhikhiwind, Amritsar, Dinanagar and in Sultanpur Lodhi. The four major professional courses, whose training is imparted across the IKGPTU colleges, includes Engineering, Pharmacy, Management and in Architecture.
These courses span the entire width of levels, right from the UG till the doctoral stage. There are a total of twenty- six affiliated colleges in the field of pharmacy. As is required by law, these courses are recognized by the PCI (Pharmacy Council of India). The B. Pharm and the M. Pharm programmes are offered at the undergrad and post grad levels respectively. The former is a four- year programme, while the latter lasts for two years. There are another four colleges offering architecture courses. Management is a much bigger field, in terms of number of students enrolled. A total of one- hundred and one colleges offer these courses.
Another seventy- five of them offer courses related to engineering. Besides these which are exclusively dedicated to an area of study, the IKGPTU also has eleven institutions, that can broadly be categorized within the Integrated headline. The university is also connected to the GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Networks) which offers a method for the academicians to keep updating their academic portfolios consistently. It is also part of the NKN (National Knowledge Network) which is one of the largest and super- quick methods for knowledge sharing usual virtual classrooms all over the country. Online learning is another methodology that the IKGPTU strongly endorses.
That is why it is a signatory the SWAYAM initiative of the Government of India. This university has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps). The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATMs, convenience stores and access to public transport, may be availed immediately outside, the main campus. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is served at the college cafeteria.
Admissions to the engineering courses is via the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Mains at the UG level and by the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) at the master’s. The CMAT (Common Management Aptitude Test) takes care of the MBA admissions. In addition, several examinations are also conducted by the state government of Punjab. Selection to the other exams, is via merit scores. All this and more has led to the Jalandhar- based IK Gujral Punjab Technical University procuring top ranks across the platforms. The NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) has placed the IKGPTU at rank 96th for engineering all over the country.
The placements are likewise improving. Special trainings are provided to the students to cope with the recruiting demands. Students are also connected to job fairs, so that at least some of them, may take up employment on their own. The constituent colleges of the IKGPTU have their own placement process. One of them- the DAVIET- is particularly good at it.
