Hi!

A 90 percentile in the CAT is considered to be a good percentile and might fetch you an Interview call from some of the renowned institutions across the country offering the MBA programme. Every year, IIMs release their minimum sectional and overall cutoffs which candidates must obtain as a minimum eligibility in order to be considered to get an Interview call. However, securing a minimum percentile does not guarantee an Interview call as it depends upon various other factors as well such as overall profile of candidates such as Class 10, Class 12, and Graduation marks, work experience, academic background, and gender diversity, etc. Getting an Interview call from an IIM at 90 percentile in the CAT is a difficult task until you either have an exceptional profile or you belong to reserved category.

Candidates seeking admission to the postgraduate management programmes offered in various institutes across the country do not necessarily require any work experience to crack any MBA entrance examination such as CAT , MAT, SNAP , etc. Every year, a number of candidates who do not have any work experience appear for various management aptitude tests, score a great percentile, and even get admission to a number of elite MBA colleges in the country. The work experience can help candidates getting an Interview call, and might help them during Interviews as well. But, having a work experience is not a necessary condition to appear for the entrance examination. Some colleges consider work experience while calculating the composite score while preparing the final merit list of selected candidates.

Strong performance in the Pshycometric test and descriptive writing increase your chances to get into mica even if you score 80 percentile.the admission is based upon whole performance including every marks.

ALL the best!!!!

Hi!

Scoring a mere percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) does not give you a guarantee to get an interview call from a top IIM. The institutes offering the MBA/ PGP in India, especially the IIMs have a very complex admission process . These institutes give consideration to a lot of factors while giving an interview call to candidates. These factors include CAT score, Class 10, Class 12, and Bachelor's degree marks, work experience, academic, and gender diversity, etc. If you even score somewhere around 98 percentile in the CAT , this will not mean that you will get a confirm call from top IIMs (specially the top 6 IIMs). However, if you belong to the reserved category, then there are good chances of receiving an interview call from top IIMs at 98 percentile. Therefore, the CAT score is not the only criteria but is one of the criteria for admission to the IIMs.

You can predict your CAT percentile by using the CAT Percentile Predictor 2024 .

Balancing CAT preparation with college studies requires strategic planning and time management. Here’s a concise approach to help you prepare effectively:

1. **Create a Timetable**: Allocate dedicated time for CAT preparation daily, even if it’s just 2-3 hours. Focus on one CAT section (VARC, DILR, QA) each day to maintain balance. Weekends can be used for extensive practice and mock tests.

2. **Leverage College Breaks**: Use gaps between classes, study breaks, or commute time to revise formulas, solve quick questions, or read newspapers to enhance your reading comprehension and vocabulary for VARC.

3. **Focus on Basics First**: Strengthen your fundamentals in Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation. Use your college academic breaks to dive deeper into complex topics.

4. **Mock Tests & Analysis**: Start taking mock tests early to build exam temperament. Analyze your mistakes thoroughly to improve your strategy and time management.

5. **Consistency over Intensity**: Study regularly, even for short periods. Consistency will help you cover more topics without overwhelming yourself.

6. **Balance Both Priorities**: Ensure your college assignments and studies are managed well to avoid last-minute stress. Prioritize subjects in both CAT and college where you need more attention.

By maintaining a disciplined schedule and staying focused, you can efficiently manage both CAT preparation and college studies.

hope this helps you!!

Hi!

Congratulations on securing 89.27 percentile in CAT. As stated, 89.27 is a good score but you will not able to apply for many of the good colleges as these colleges consider sectional cutoffs as one of the major components while shortlisting candidates for the GDPI process and for the final selection. 32.46 percentile in VARC section is below par score and will not fetch you a call from many of the business schools despite having a good overall percentile. As you have not mentioned your category, I am assuming that you belong to the general category (If you belong to the reserved category, you might get an Interview call from some of the colleges depending upon their selection criteria).

Therefore, I will suggest you to for the business schools which do not give consideration to the sectional percentile and emphasize on the overall percentile. Some of the good business schools that you can target based on your overall CAT percentile are given below:

  • IMT Ghaziabad
  • Goa Institute of Management
  • Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai
  • IMI Delhi
  • TAPMI Manipal

The list given above is non-exhaustive, candidates can get to know about all the colleges having no sectional CAT cutoffs .
