The Ph.D. programme at IISER Pune is a blend of classroom curriculum, mentoring undergraduate students along with a major research component. The programme covers some major topics listed below.

Astrophysics and Cosmology
Condensed Matter, Statistical, and Nonlinear Physics
Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
Physics of Soft and Living Matter
Physics of Soft and Living Matter
Gravity and High Energy Physics

In the first two years, the student will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Upon the successful completion of the comprehensive examination and two years of JRF, the student will be eligible to receive a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for a maximum of another three years. The research progress of the student will be monitored by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) involving the thesis supervisor (Convener) and two other faculty members. Upon completion of satisfactory research work (as construed by the RAC), the research scholar will deliver a research seminar regarding his/her work before the submission of the thesis. The submitted thesis will be evaluated by external examiners before the conduct of viva-voce. Successful open defense of the thesis will lead to the award of Ph.D. degree during the annual convocation.

Eligibility Criteria

1. The candidate should have a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in the majoring subject) or a CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC, ST, and PwD/VH candidates) in MSc or four-year BTech/BE/BS, and

2. The candidate should mandatorily satisfy at least one of the following (mandatory) criteria:

Qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with a score in the CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF category, valid at the time of admissions.
Holds a rank equal to 500 or better (625 or better for candidates in the reserved categories) in GATE-2026 or JEST-2025 PhD Physics.
Holds an INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (The candidate should possess a provisional selection letter for PhD fellowship at the time of the interview.
Has an Integrated BS-MS dual degree from any of the IISERs or an equivalent Master's degree in Physics from an Institute of National Importance with a CGPA greater than or equal to 8 on a scale of 10 (or equivalent).

Admission Details

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to appear for an interview to be conducted in person. The final selection to the program will be based on the candidate's performance in the interview by the selection committee.

College Infrastructure

The college has fairly good inrastructure. The hostel rooms are equipped with ethernet ports to facilitate good internet connectivity. However, routers are not allowed in the hostel rooms. The labs are well euqipped with safety features and good air flow.
