The Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Patna in Bihar works as an extension centre of the BIT Mesra which is in the state of Jharkhand. It was established in 2006. It sits on 25 acres of land. The origins of the institute may be traced back to 1955 with the formation of the parent BITS Mesra. Besides Patna, other extension centres have been established in Kolkata, Allahabad, Noida, Deoghar and in Ranchi. It even has two international extension centres in the Middle East region. There are at Ras-Al-Khaimah in the UAE and in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
En number of courses are available for study here at the BIT Mesra campus. They are available straight from the UG till the doctoral levels. At the UG level, the programmes may broadly be divided into the areas of engineering, architecture and management. The B.E may be pursued in the areas of – Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Production Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and in Electronics & Communication Engineering. BBA and BCA programmes are also available at the UG level. At the PG level, there are two main options here. One is the MTech in Computer Science and the other one is the ME in Electronics & Communication.
Admissions to the BE programmes is via the JEE Mains. This is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of numbers and possibly amongst the largest in the world. This paper is given by more than 12 lakh people annually. It is a three- hour exam worth 90 marks constituting 3 segments with equal weightage. Those segments are- Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. Success in this exam opens the doorway to top colleges.
The entire academics and research work is controlled by the eleven departments over here. These departments are for- Architecture, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Humanities & Management, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and for Electronics & Communication Engineering. Top international and domestic bands have visited the campus for this rock show. The annual athletics meet here is known as the Prakrida. The banking facilities are so superior here, that there is even a fully- functional ATM within the campus. Besides this, there is a really well- stocked central library here. It provides access to numerous national and international academic journals. The computer centre too is equipped with the best of the latest equipment. A dispensary is located within the campus to deal with any kinds of sudden emergencies. For recreation purposes, indoor sports facilities are present here. Outdoors are also well- manicured, thanks to the presence of a large football field. A canteen is here for the preparation of hygienic food for the students, staff and faculty present on campus.
