The DAV College owes its origin to the Arya Samaj movement, started by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. He established the Dayanand Anglo- Vedic (DAV) Schools System back in 1886, in Lahore. The first DAV College came up in Jalandhar, in the year 1918. The DAV College Managing Committee (DAVMC) looks after the administration here. It is one of the largest educational groups in the country, managing multiple outfits, across the spectrum. The college is affiliated to the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), based in Amritsar. This ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission). The total campus of the DAV College in Jalandhar spans over a sprawling area worth eighty- eight acres of land in the state of Punjab.
The college has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. The Jalandhar- based DAV College has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps).
Courses are run here at the DAV College Jalandhar, at both the UG as well as PG levels, plus some diploma programmes. Courses abound from across the streams. At the under- grad level, commerce and arts students may opt for a B. Com or a BA respectively. The professional courses of a BBA or BCA may also be availed. In addition, there is the increasingly popular choice of BJMC (Bachelors of Journalism and Mass Communication). Some of these courses may be taken up under an honours mode, while others could be on general mode. The maximum options abound here, for the science students.
A BSc. has the options for the areas of Computer Science, Bio Technology, Information Technology and in Economics. There is also the unique course in Food Science and Technology. Two more innovative BSc. programmes may be availed, in the so- named BSc. in Medical or in Non- Medical. The BSc. Medical is primarily made up of the PCB specialization involving the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, while in the BSc. Non- Medical, Mathematics replaced Biology to make it a PCM combo. At the master’s stage, science students may go for an MSc. These may be availed for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Mathematics, Computer Science and in Information Technology.
Likewise, commerce students may opt for an M. Com. Humanities students too have a multitude of offers. The MA options exist for Hindi, History, Economics, English, Punjabi, Sanskrit and in Political Science. Beyond all this, there exist some diploma programmes. These are primarily meant for working professionals, or those unable to dedicate, full hours to academics. These diplomas are available at across the levels. The areas covered include Computer Applications, Web Designing and in Financial Services. Research has throughout played a key role in the growth and development of the DAV College in Jalandhar. For this purpose, the college undertakes several consulting assignments for industry partners.
A lot of the funding for such assignments comes from industry or government bodies. Some of these key agencies include the likes of- DST (Department of Science and Technology), FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure), UGC, DAE (Department of Atomic Energy), BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) and the DBT (Department of Bio Technology). Some such assignments have even been undertaken by the students themselves. Several faculty members have even been published on respected journals and other publications. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. There are several clubs and societies as well on campus. They help in conducting students’ co- curricular and extra- curricular activities. There is thus a thriving student community here, engaging in activities such as sports, hiking, adventure, music, dance, fine arts, photography and more.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. There is a spacious guest house to accommodate visitors.
