Sree Narayana College for Women, Kollam Facilities

  • Girls Hostel

    The College hostel was established by the management on November 7th, 2010 for the purpose of accommodating students coming from other districts and states. The Principal of the college is the warden of the hostel and has the authority to decide the inmates. A deputy warden is appointed from among the faculty and a matron appointed by the management stays in the hostel. The hostel has 12 rooms including a dormitory and a total of 52 students can be accommodated. The hostel also has a mess hall, kitchen, storeroom, cook's room, office room, and sick room. The students are in charge of deciding the menu for their breakfast, lunch, tea, and dinner. A watchman is appointed to take care of safety concerns. The students' movement is monitored with the help of a register and if they have to go outside the campus for any purpose they have to take prior permission from the warden.

  • Medical/Hospital

    The college has a health center with a first aid facility for the students.

  • Gym

    The college has a well-equipped fitness centre which is maintained by the Department of Physical Education. Students and faculty avail of the facilities of the fitness centre. Equipment in the fitness centre includes Treadmills, Gym cycle, Orbetrech, Multi Machines for different muscle training, Squat machines, Bench press machines, Medicine balls, Dumbbells etc. There is also specialized equipment for Weight lifting and Powerlifting which includes weights, barbells and a rubberized platform. 25 members can be accommodated at a time in the centre. The students have two sessions for training � morning from 6 am to 8 am and in the evening from 4 pm to 6.30 pm. The centre also provides strength training sessions to many students who have represented our college at the state, national and international levels.

  • Library

    The college was founded by the great statesman and leader Sri.R.Sankar in 1951, who was inspired by the idea of 'Enlightenment through Education' of the great Karmayogi, Sree Narayana Guru. The college library also began functioning in the same year. The first book entered in the stock register was “Historical Atlas of India" on 09/07/1951.Library Infrastructure: The college library is functioning in a two-storied building with a total area of 4000 sq ft. There is a seating capacity of 100 seats. The college library is a centralized and fully automated library. The total collection of the library includes 59658 books, 2130 Reference Books, 50 journals, 65 popular magazines, 13 newspapers, and a collection of CDs and DVDs. There are about 32314 titles in the library. The library software we are using is LIBSOFT. This college has 15 teaching departments offering various courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The members of this library are 2500 students, 93 teachers, and 33 nonteaching staff.

  • Sports

    The college has an outdoor basketball court which has been constructed keeping in mind the regulations for conducting tournaments. The playing surface is concrete, colored red with acrylic paint and the ring boards are made of fiber. The court dries quickly after rain and the surface can be easily cleaned without much effort. This helps in resuming the games without wasting time. The court is also used as Badminton courts which are four in number and the college Roll Ball team has their practice sessions in the court. The court is also used by the Volleyball team. The poles, nets, and goalposts needed for each of the above games are maintained by the Department of Physical Education.

  • I.T Infrastructure

    The college has two computer centres. One is the MP LAD Scheme computer lab established in 2011 with 25 computers and a capacity to accommodate 25 students at a time. The other is I.T Misson (Govt. of Kerala) Sponsored Skill Enhancement Women Resource Centre. Though women in Kerala enjoy the high literary status, their role in the IT field is less significant. To compensate for this they are trained at the college level itself. For this purpose, Skill Enhancement Women Resource Centres have been set up in 10 women's colleges in Kerala including S.N. College for Women, Kollam by Kerala State IT Mission (KSITM). Free training is provided to SC/ST students. A core group within the college headed by the Principal, Nodal officer and faculty regularly review the program. The curriculum includes training on various skills such as communication, behavioural, personality development, computer operational skills, etc. for a schedule of 120 hrs. A computer lab with 15 PC was set up along with training in other skills. The lab can accommodate 15 students at a time and different shifts are arranged before and after class hours to give training to students. Job placements are facilitated for students in the IT industry with the help of a suitable tie-up with industry and placement agencies.

  • Cafeteria

    The college canteen is the most popular hangout on the campus where the students come in groups for refreshments as well as for their discussions about whatnot. The canteen provides lip-smacking delicacies for breakfast, lunch, and tea at reasonable rates to faculty and subsidized rates to students. The canteen uses the organic vegetables and fruits from our organic garden for preparing meals. With the contributions from the Former Students Association and the Retired Teachers Association, the canteen provides free meals to needy students on all working days.

  • Auditorium

    The Auditorium at Sree Narayana College for Women, Kollam is definitely the most visited place by students, teachers, and non-teaching staff, as most of the recreational activities and celebrations are held here. It is equipped with the most modern audio-visual facilities and a very effective light and sound system. The building has a seating capacity of approximately 500 students. All the major functions of the college like Arts Day, Union Inauguration, Induction programs, Merit Day, Intercollegiate competitions, Exhibitions, Film Screening, etc are conducted in the auditorium. Many students have identified their hidden talents on the majestic stage of SNCW and have become great artists and performers thereafter.

  • Alumni Associations

    FSA is very active on campus with the strength of more than 470 life members. The FSA plays an active role in all the endeavors of the college. The association has instituted yearly cash awards for meritorious students in each subject. Free uniforms, mid-day meals, and books are contributed by the FSA to the indigent students. Onam and New Year celebrations are conducted to offer a platform for former students from various walks of life to come together. The Alumni Association of this prestigious institution functions with the principal of the college as the patron. The office bearers for the year 2015-16 are Dr. Sherly P. Anand as Patron, Dr. R Bindhu as President, Prof. Leela Mary Koshy as Vice President, Dr. Sreeja J as the Secretary, Dr. Selsa S, and Smt. Nishida Sikandar as Joint Secretaries and Dr. Rani P as the treasurer. There are an advisory head and an elected executive committee of thirty members.

  • Laboratories

    The college has a departmental-based laboratory facility for the students.

  • Convenience Store

    The college has a cooperative society which was established in the year 1949, one year after the establishment of this great institution, and has been a part of this college ever since. All the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff are shareholders of the society. The students get Associate Membership in society by paying Rs 20 at the time of admission. The college uniform, textbooks, notebooks, stationery items, laboratory records, snacks, etc are made available to the students at concessional rates. The Cooperative society caters to the needs of the students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. The society also maintains a chit fund which is well utilized by the teaching and non-teaching staff.

  • Classrooms

    The college has very well-ventilated, naturally lighted, spacious, and well-furnished classrooms. There are 62 classrooms and most of the classrooms have a capacity to accommodate 50 students. In addition to this, there are large lecture halls that can accommodate 70 students. Of the 62 classrooms, 12 are smart classrooms and the teaching-learning pedagogy used in these classrooms is IT-enabled all classrooms are equipped with a standard array of presentation equipment that provides our faculty with the best multimedia tools for their instructional needs.

Our college have all the necessary infrastructure facilities. Sports centres are good even though we dont use that. Hostel facilities provided by the college is good and class rooms are modernized with projector facilities

College Infrastructure

The college has all facilities that are expected to serve the students. It has a large library full of a wide range of books to cater to all sorts of educational purposes of the student. It also has study centers as well as study halls for the students to prepare for exams and projects and such. Other facilities include a fully functional fitness centre, computer centre, seminar halls as well as a college canteen.
