- Fees: ₹ 10500
Degrees offered: M.Sc., B.Sc.(Hons), B.Sc., Ph.D, BS
Physics is that aspect of science in general that deals with the physical structure of matter which can be living or non-living and different substances interact with each other. Physics is studying anything ranging from small particles (quantum and atomic physics) to studying much bigger machines such as cars and trucks.
The main goal while studying physics is to devise how the universe acts and behaves. To pursue physics in their careers, students go for an undergraduate degree in Physics which is Bachelor of Science in Physics (B.Sc. Physics). It is a three-year degree and includes specialized studies in the area of Physics.
To gain admission into a B.Sc. Physics course, a person needs to meet the eligibility criteria. If the person does not meet the admission criteria, his or her admission can be revoked. The admission criteria for an aspiring student looking to study B.Sc. Physics is:
The student needs to have a minimum percentage of 60% at the Senior Secondary/ 10+2 level.
The student must have Science as his or her stream. (Both Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/ Physics, Chemistry, Biology are acceptable)
Entrance Exams for Physics Courses
DUCET- The Dravidian University Common Entrance Test (DUCET) is conducted by the Dravidian University for students to gain admission in their postgraduate courses.
GITAM Admission Test (GITAM GAT) is conducted by the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) to gain admission into both undergraduate and postgraduate courses
Admissions based on 10+2 result- This is the most popular method of admission in B.Sc. Physics is merit-based admission through the results from Senior Secondary / 10+2. Based on the performance of students in the 10+2, a merit list is prepared and cutoffs are announced.
After completing a Bachelor's degree in Physics, a student can go down any of the three following avenues: -
The student can pursue a Master's degree in Physics. The Master's degree that a student can pursue after doing B.Sc. Physics is mainly M.Sc. Physics and M.Phil. Physics.
The student can take up a job as a research assistant and can go for research in the area of Physics.
Students who are willing to go into the market and look for a job also have a bunch of different job profiles they can look at.
To be eligible for M.Sc. Physics, the candidate must have a minimum percentile of 55% during his or her undergraduate degree and must satisfy all the eligibility criteria required by the B.Sc. Physics. Completing a Master's degree increases the employability of the student by a significant amount.
When we look at international superpower countries such as the USA, the UK, Japan and Germany, we can assess the job opportunities available there in the physics field. These countries provide state of the art cutting edge facilities and inculcation of innovations from time to time.
This means that the professionals working in these facilities would be compensated accordingly. There is a huge scope of Physics abroad and in India, as it is a well-set field and innovations are continually happening.

When students are taught physics at the Senior Secondary/ 10+2 level, students are taught the subject often clubbed with mathematics and along with other subjects. When students are taught this course, they are taught more subjects which are more purely linked to physics, a student who is interested in physics will have a great time studying this subject.
These main physics subjects are only touched at the Senior secondary level but are taught quite deeply at the undergraduate level. The subjects taught to students during the duration of this course are: -
Electricity and Magnetism
Mathematical Physics
Waves and Oscillations
Mechanics
Wave Optics
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Electromagnetics
Atomic and Molecular Physics
Quantum Mechanics and its applications
Thermal Physics
Optics
Electronic Devices

B.Sc. Physics is a very sought after course and opens various career avenues upon completion. Graduates can get jobs as Scientists or Researchers at many leading research facilities such as the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), they can get job offers from many sectors such as banking and railway. Graduates can also opt to teach and become School teachers or college professors.
Physics is a very vast field and may not be as emerging a field as it was about 25-30 years back, but due to the size of the field and the potential, innovations and trends keep lining up and it makes this field a pretty interesting field.
The various upcoming trends in this field are listed below: -
Usage of Physics in Space- Due to the depletion in the resources of this planet's resources, companies like NASA and SpaceX have taken pole position into space-venturing. Aeronautics is a very significant field in physics, and many future physics graduates and post-graduates will be interested in outer space.
Artificial Intelligence- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are becoming trending topics since the past couple of years. Although the main part of AI and ML is the coding and the It part but to design the machines, one shall know physics and the machines must be designed efficiently.
Remote vehicles- Remotely driven cars and drones have gained much popularity just over the last couple of years. Physics needs to be known to properly design and maintain the proper functioning of these vehicles.

hi,
Yes, if you have an M.Sc in Physics, you can definitely apply for scientist jobs, but it depends on the specific job and how they define “equivalent qualification.” Many research institutes and government labs like ISRO, DRDO, or BARC accept M.Sc Physics graduates for scientist or scientific officer roles.
Just make sure to read the job notification carefully. Sometimes they want a degree in engineering or technology, but often they accept M.Sc in Physics as enough qualification. If you’re unsure, you can always contact the recruitment office to confirm.
