The DAV College owes its origin to the Arya Samaj movement, started by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. He established the Dayanand Anglo- Vedic (DAV) Schools System back in 1886, in Lahore. The DAV College Managing Committee (DAVMC) looks after the administration here. It is one of the largest educational groups in the country, managing multiple outfits, across the spectrum. The DAV College in Chandigarh (DAV CHD), was established in the year 1958, around the time, the city itself was founded. The college is affiliated to the Panjab University, also located in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The total campus of the DAV College in Chandigarh spans over an area worth sixteen acres of land. The college has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Courses are run here at the DAV College Chandigarh, at both the UG as well as PG levels, plus some diploma programmes. Courses abound from across the streams.
At the under- grad level, commerce and arts students may opt for a B. Com or a BA respectively. These courses may be taken up under an honours or general mode. The BA honours options exist for the areas of- English, Geography, Economics, Hindi, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology and in Public Administration. The B. Com meanwhile may be taken up in E- Commerce or in Business Finance & Accounting. The professional courses of a BBA or BCA may also be availed. The maximum options abound here, for the science students. A BSc. has the options for the areas of Computer Science, Bio Technology, Bio Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology and in Botany.
At the master’s stage, commerce students may go for an M. Com. For humanities aspirants, an MA may be taken up in several of the areas where an undergrad course is on offer, plus the area of Business Economics. Same is the case with an MSc. The Chandigarh- based DAV College is otherwise known for its vocational programmes offered under the PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana). The B. Voc. may be pursued in Food Science & Technology or in Medical Lab Technology. Beyond all this, there exist some diploma programmes. These are primarily meant for working professionals, or those unable to dedicate, full hours to academics.
These diplomas are available at across the levels. The areas covered include Computer Applications, Marketing Management, Mass Communication, Medical Lab Technology and in Cosmetology & Beauty Care. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria.
The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus. There is a spacious guest house to accommodate visitors. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. All this and more has helped fuel the right rankings across the platforms for this college. The DAV CHD has been placed within the 151- 200 rank band as part of the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) for 2019.
