      Academics

In the field of academics i can say they only prefer local students that is bengali students.I was a north indian student who went there for graduation B.com (honours),i went through a rough time they only teach in bengali .Students like us didnt catch anything ,after complaining also they didn't switch to english or hindi ,that was a partial behaviour and our academics result decline due to that.

      College Infra

College infrastructure was good .This college runs with three names in three shifts .Ashutosh college , Jogamaya devi college and Shayaprasad mukherjee college .overall its good but there should be some open area also so that students can relax and can study there .It is fully closed.

      Campus Life

I have no experience or very less experience of campus life.because there was entirely bengali culture and students like us feel uncomfortable.I had limited friends that is only 2-3 friends.we attend lectures,do group study ,spent some time in library and went home . That's it .

      Placements

No ,this college is only degree oriented college .They didn't connect theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge. There is no placement process in entire college. No company comes in this college for placement .They only take fees and give degrees to students not job security.

      Value For Money

No.It is only that submit fees ,give exams and take your marksheets and degrees .Not value for money .They don't treat each and every student equal in college there is partiality in everything even in teaching .If we have any doubt they don't clear it rather scold the student or ask her to go out of class when asked to explain in hindi or english. They only prefer bengali language and bengali students.

Solid academic foundation with dedicated Physics faculty.

Neha Yadav Posted on 31 Jan'26
      B.Sc Physics Hons - Batch of 2022-01-01
      4.6

      Academics

"I chose B.Sc Physics Hons because I’ve always been fascinated by how things work at a fundamental level, and Jogamaya is known for its strong science faculty. The quality of teaching is actually quite high; the professors aren't just reading from slides, they really dive into the derivations. As for the curriculum, it’s the standard CU syllabus which is very theoretical. While it’s updated with modern physics, I wouldn't say it makes you 100% 'job-ready' for a corporate role immediately. It's more geared towards preparing you for higher studies like an M.Sc or research. You have to do a lot of self-study to connect what you learn in the lab to real-world industry applications, but the academic foundation you get here is very solid.

      College Infra

Honestly, the infrastructure is exactly what you'd expect from an old, established North Kolkata college. We have the basic labs and equipment needed for Physics, but don't expect anything super high-tech—it's more about traditional learning. The classrooms are decent, though they can get a bit stuffy in the summer heat. The library is definitely the best part of the campus; it's well-maintained and has a solid collection of books. As for living spaces, there isn't a massive hostel on-site, but the general campus area is kept fairly clean. The canteen food is typical college fare—affordable and okay for a quick snack, but nothing fancy. It’s a functional campus, just not a 'luxury' one.

      Campus Life

The best feature of the campus has to be its location in Hazra; it’s super well-connected and feels very safe for female students, even if you're staying late for labs or events. The worst feature is probably the lack of a large open field, so there’s not much space for big sports, but students still engage in plenty of cultural programs and college fests. The student crowd is very diverse and friendly, and the support staff are generally helpful with administrative work. As for emergencies, there are hospitals nearby, and the college environment is disciplined enough to handle basic issues. It really feels like a close-knit community where the teachers and students actually know each other by name.

      Placements

Placement is one area where the college could definitely improve, especially for pure science streams like Physics. In our 2022 batch, hardly anyone got a direct job offer through the college; most of us were focused on preparing for JAM or other entrance exams for our Masters anyway. The college is supportive with seminars and skill training, but you really have to be proactive on your own if you want a job straight after graduation.

      Value For Money

I honestly feel that Jogamaya Devi College is one of the best options in Kolkata if you're looking for value for money. For my B.Sc Physics Hons course, the cost was very minimal—it worked out to only about ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 per year, which is extremely affordable compared to private institutions. Even with such low fees, you get access to highly qualified professors and a respected University of Calcutta degree. You definitely get your money's worth because the academic quality and the weight the college name carries in the city are much higher than what you actually pay. It’s a great choice for students who want a solid education without a huge financial burden.
