Course Overview

Introduction to the Solid State of Chemistry is a relishing first-year university program, authorized by the edX Institute of Digital Education and it is a collaboration with MIT. The course explores the properties and characteristics of chemical bonding with the inspection of solids. These properties include thermal expansion, electrical conductivity, stiffness, optical properties, and strength, and hence this course many concepts about practical chemistry.

Introduction to Solid State Chemistry course describes how masters uncover the bond, the chemical bonding, electronic structure, atomic order, and further categories of atomic elements in amorphous solids and crystallines which comprise ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, and metals. Introduction to Solid State Chemistry also covers parts of organic chemistry acid-base equilibrium studies, solution chemistry, biochemistry, diffusion, and chemical kinetics.

Introduction to the Solid State Chemistry program includes various examples of industrial practice and its grave impact on the environment, storage, and generation of energy like battery cells, and lastly, newer technologies like photonic appliances. This course is instructor-paced and can be taken in the paid or free audit mode. In the paid certificate mode, the candidates will be provided with unlimited access whereas in the free audit mode, they will be given access only for a limited period.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

Participants must have received at least high education on the subjects of chemistry (not a compulsion). Knowledge of high school calculus is a must.

Certification Qualifying Details

Introduction to Solid State Chemistry has two packs- audit and verified. Only those candidates who change their registration to verified track, pass all their assessments, and pay the certification price can be eligible for receiving the certificate from MIT.

What you will learn

Knowledge of Chemistry

Among the various teachings that the Introduction to Solid State Chemistry program will provide its candidates, the major ones are listed beneath:

  • The course starts with learnings about the solid-state of chemistry, atomic order, and element periodicity.
  • The candidates learn about the duality of wave particles, chemical properties, hybridization, and electron sequence.
  • This course helps the candidates develop a sense of intuition to chemicals.
  • Candidates develop a qualitative and quantitative knowledge of the principles of chemicals.
  • Candidates learn about the structure of electrons, the arrangement of atoms, and chemical bonding.
  • Different properties about chemicals are also learned by the participants like stiffness, strength and thermal expansion & optical transmission.
  • Candidates understand the relationship between different crystals, their principles on which it is, their properties, and their basic structure.
  • Candidates learn how to maintain chemical equilibrium, how to make solutions, polymer synthesis, and the structure of carbohydrates.

Who it is for

edX’s Introduction to Solid State Chemistry program is mostly recommended to these specified set of candidates:

  • People having high school calculus and chemistry education must opt for this course.
  • People having a science background with an inclination towards chemistry specifically can also do Introduction to Solid State Chemistry course.
  • People willing to build a career around the subject of solid chemistry are also recommended to apply for this course.

NOTE: People residing in the Crimea region of Ukraine, Iran, and Cuba cannot register for this course because US sanctions restrict this course offering, as of now.
