    Course Overview

    If you want to hear what economists have to say about the challenge that poverty poses, then The Challenges of Global Poverty online course is for you. The questions addressed in this course include: Is extreme poverty no longer a thing? What is life like for people who live on daily wages of less than $1? 

    Hopefully, by the end of The Challenges of Global Poverty programme, you will have the answers to the questions listed above, and many more. Students will understand how to make schools work for poor children, how to rid them of diseases, and if microfinance is overrated or invaluable. Candidates will also discover if economic development should be left to the market, NGOs, or if they can seek foreign help. 

    The programme illustrates the right place for intervention. You can take this course even without a background in economics and statistics. There are various resources available throughout the training to help candidates learn or revise relevant topics. The Challenges of Global Poverty training is eleven weeks long and a part of the MicroMasters programme in DEPD.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Exposure to economics and statistics will be helpful but is not a prerequisite for the Challenges of Global Poverty certification. There are resources available to help candidates learn or revise relevant topics.

    Knowledge of Economics

    After completing The Challenges of Global Poverty training, you should be able to:

    • Identify and analyze the root causes of underdevelopment using economic principles
    • Understand the constraints that the poor live within, and the trade-offs they make while taking decisions
    • Interpreting various findings of global empirical researches to assess the efficacy of policies, strategies, and interventions to counter poverty
    • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of these researches
    • Understand the econometric tools used in development research

    Yes, this course is a part of MIT’s MicroMasters program in Data, Economics, and Development Policy (DEDP).

    2: I do not have a statistics and economics background. Can I take this course?

    Yes, you can. The resources available in the course will help you learn about all the relevant topics.

    3: What is the course preview?

    The course preview is meant to provide prospective learners with a feel of the course content and exercises. If they are new to the subjects or wish to jog their memory, there are resources available in the course preview.     4: Should I go through the course preview before applying?

    Yes. The exercises given in the course preview will help you find out if you are up for the course.  If you score less than 60% in these exercises, you should review the relevant topics before applying.

    5: Is the challenges of global poverty course available in all countries?

    Yes. The only regions where this training is not available are Crimea (Ukraine), Cuba, and Iran.
