The Birsa Institute of Technology in Sindri has a chequered and glorious history. It was started off way back in 1949 under the name of College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Patna, the capital of Bihar. A year later, the campus shifted to the town of Sindri, which now falls within the state of Jharkhand. It was renamed as the Bihar Institute of Technology and affiliated under the Ranchi University. At present, it is affiliated to the Vinoba Bhave University in Hazaribag. Sindri may be a small town, but it isn’t too far off the city of Dhanbad. It has a sprawling 400- acre campus near the eastern bank of the mighty Damodar river. After the formation of the then- the new state of Jharkhand, the institute was renamed as the Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT) Sindri.
