The American College, Madurai Facilities Details: Hostel, Campus, Infrastructure, Library, Canteen

TAC Madurai provides students with hostel accommodation. The college has four hostels for boys named; Washburn Hall, Dudley Hall, Wallace Hall, and Zumbro Hall.

There are two hostels for women: Women’s Hall and Noyes Garden. Both are located on the main campus itself with limited accommodation.

The college has a health center with a first aid facility for the students.

A well-equipped gym is one of the latest additions to promote the awareness of physical fitness among students. Both men and women students have access to it. A qualified trainer manages the center to offer professional advice.

The library of TAC Madurai helps students and faculty members in fulfilling their research requirements. With more than 60,000 volumes, a reading room, and a reference station, students are able to get every information they want. Students can find numerous books on different topics.

TAC Madurai has a huge playground for students to play and actively participate in sports-related activities. There are courts for tennis, flood-lit basketball, volleyball, fields for football, cricket, hockey and well-laid tracks for athletic events. Sports facilities are provided by TAC Madurai for students to participate in both indoor and outdoor games.

The college has excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students.

The canteen of The American College Madurai provides fresh and quality meals at affordable prices. Students can go to the canteen in their free time with their friends to hangout. The canteen helps students to get refreshed from the daily hassle.

The American College has advanced laboratory infrastructure common to all science departments. It houses very sophisticated equipment like scanning electron microscope, X-ray Unit for crystal diffraction and High-temperature Furnace for crystal growth.

ASTRO CLUB

The Postgraduate and Research Department of Physics of The American College has a forum to view the celestial bodies like moon, planets, comets, solar and lunar eclipses through Sky watch programme which is periodically organized from 1995 through the launch of 10 inch Newtonian type reflector telescope which is the only astronomical instrument available at the college level in Tamil Nadu. Through this unique forum community outreach programmes are organized to promote scientific temper.

Green Club

The Green Club which has the student members, strives to develop love of nature and adventure and to instill awareness of the environment in the college community. It works for the upliftment and conservation of trees and makes people aware of environmental problems such as deforestation, land degradation, water pollution, and global warming caused by imprudent greeds of humans.

The activities of this club include:(on environmental awareness and improvement of environment)

• Organise seminars, debates, lectures and popular talks on environmental issues in the College.
• Campaign against plastic carry bags, use of loud speakers, fireworks, use of unnecessary horns and promote recycling of glass and metals, accumulation of water in the neighbourhood water bodies.
• Field visit to environmentally important sites including polluted and degraded sites, wildlife parks, etc.
• Organise rallies, marches, form human chains and perform street plays at public places with a view to spread environmental awareness.
• Action based activities like tree plantation, cleanliness drives both within and outside the College campus.
• Grow kitchen gardens, maintain vermin-composting pits, construct water-harvesting structures in the College, practice paper recycling, etc.
• Prepare inventories of polluting sources and forward it to enforcement agencies.
• Maintenance of public places like parks and gardens both within and outside the College campus.
