Differentiation can be in terms of Gender, Nationality, Industry experience, roles performed. Therefore, Indian IT Male (IIM) with only technology experience is the most common profile and the worst demography to come from when applying to any Global MBA program.

However, there is second aspect that IIMA PGPX admission committee looks at and that is past records. It include academic records, GMAT score, standing in sports competitions, and other extra-curricular activities like music. Third thing they look at future potential. It can be demonstrated by.

Hello Vishnu,

Hope you are doing all good. Irrespective of your branch (Food Technology) you will fall under the umbrella of Engineers when you apply for CAT. Now, since you want an admission in IIM Ahmedabad, let me tell you that on IIM Ahmedabad does not offer specialized courses such as  Agri Business and Management at least at the PGDM level.

It provides you with a diploma in general management with which you can enter into any management field be it Agri Business and Management.

So to answer your question straight, Yes you can apply for CAT in order to get admission in IIM Ahmedabad being a Food Engineering student but rest assured you will have to clear the normal cutoff as of any engineer. No benefit will be given due to your background. However, your background and aspiration in Agri Management might be helpful during the PI.

Hope this was helpful.

Hi Richie,

Hope you are doing well. Selection to top B-Schools like IIM A, B, C, L, K, I, XLRI, MDI, FMS, NITIE requires a you to ace in a lot of categories.

  • Firstly, your CAT / XAT score needs to be phenomenal.
  • Secondly, your past academics needs to be very good.

Now, the first point i.e. doing well in the entrance exam is a bare minimum but everything else is subjective. Many aspirants with decent academics get through while some with brilliant academics fail. But that doesn't mean your past acads has no value. See the point is, the professors see in you what extra attribute can you bring to the batch. If they see any spark in you, you're sure to be selected and mind you me, this spark can be anything from academics to extra- curricular activities, any special hobby that you might have or any exceptional experience you might have faced.

So to simplify and answer your question straight... Yes extra-curricular activities bring in some bounty points during PI just like exceptional academics but nothing guarantees your admission. Its you, overall that they judge. Any special abilities you might possess that separates you from  the rest always becomes a turning point.

Hope this was helpful.
