    What is PGD?

    A postgraduate Diploma or PGD is a one or two-year program that is designed in such a way that it enables students to have an in-depth knowledge of the particular field. Admissions into the postgraduate diploma programs are done on the basis of merit considering the marks secured in the qualifying degree examination or the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination. After completion of the PGD program, candidates can get a job in their respective fields. Each year, a large number of students opt for postgraduate diploma programs after completing their graduation.

    PGD Eligibility

    There are certain conditions and requirements that should be fulfilled by the candidates in order to get admission. Ineligible candidates will not be offered admission. They will be disqualified. Candidates must note that the eligibility criteria for each PGD program vary from college to college. Generally, in order to be eligible for postgraduate diploma programs, candidates must have obtained a bachelor's degree in the relevant fields from the recognised institutes.

    PGD in Engineering

    • Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar offers one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (PGDIIT). The eligibility criteria for this course is that candidates should have obtained a minimum of 55per cent marks in B.E. /B.Tech./M.Sc. or equivalent in appropriate branches (50per cent marks for SC /ST).

    • National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) offers two year Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE). To be eligible for this program, candidates must have obtained at least 60per cent marks in graduation along with a valid GATE score.

    • Indian Maritime University, Mumbai Port Campus (IMU) offers Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering (PGDME). Candidates must have secured a minimum of 50per cent marks in the final year and 50per cent marks in the English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam in order to be eligible for admission.

    • Candidates must have passed a Bachelor degree from any recognised university.

    • Some institutes have age limits as well.

    PGD Admissions

    Admission into the postgraduate diploma is generally done on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in graduation or their performance in the entrance examination. The admission process for each specialization and program varies. It should be noted that all ineligible candidates will be disqualified from the admission process. To apply for the program, candidates are required to fill and submit some basic details in the application form such as personal, academic, and contact details. A separate application form needs to be submitted for each program.

    Admissions into the postgraduate diploma in management are done on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination, academic record, group discussion, and personal interview.

    PGD in Computer Application

    Generally, admissions are conducted on the basis of merit of the graduation examination. But some institutes also conduct written examinations. In such cases, the admissions are conducted on the basis of performance in the entrance exam.

    PGD in Hotel Management

    Admissions into a postgraduate diploma in hotel management are done on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the qualifying examination.

    PGD in Engineering

    Most often, institutes offer admission into the postgraduate diploma in engineering on the basis of qualifying marks. But there are some institutes that conduct entrance exams for admission. Every institute has its own admission process. Many institutes shortlist candidates on the basis of merit and then conduct interviews for final selection.

    There are some institutes that offer admission on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the entrance exam, while at the same time, there are some institutes that offer admission on the basis of marks obtained at the graduation level.

    CAT- Common Admission Test is a national-level entrance exam that is conducted by IIMs. It is conducted every year. To appear for CAT, candidates should have passed graduation with a minimum of 50per cent marks.

    GMAT - Graduate Management Admission Test is conducted for admission into management courses in various institutes across the world. GMAT scores are valid for a period of up to 5 years from the date of the examination.

    XAT- Xavier Aptitude Test is a national-level entrance exam conducted for admission into XLRI, Jamshedpur, and many other participating institutes across the country.

    CMAT - Common Management Admission Test is conducted every year by the National Testing Agency. More than 500 AICTE-approved B-schools accept CMAT scores to offer admission to management courses.

    NMAT - It is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) for admission into NMIMS and many other management institutes.

    PGD in Computer Application

    Jamia Millia Islamia conducts its own entrance exam known as JMI. Jamia Millia Islamia entrance exam is conducted for admission into the PGDCA course at the university. In order to be eligible for the entrance examination, candidates should have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in graduation.

    Sardar Patel University conducts an entrance test for the PGDCA program. The admission into the course is conducted on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in graduation and their performance in the entrance examination in a ratio of 60:40. It should be noted that only those candidates who have completed graduation under the 10+2+3 pattern of this university or any recognised university.

    Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata also conducts its own written test for admission into PGDCA courses. To be eligible for admission, A candidate must hold a graduate/postgraduate degree with a minimum of 10+2+4 years of formal education with Mathematics as one of the subjects from a recognized university/institute. Selection will be done on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance examination and candidate’s performance in the interview.

    PGD in Engineering

    CIPET JEE - It is conducted by Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) for admission into diploma engineering courses offered by various CIPET campuses. Candidates looking for admission are required to qualify the entrance examination. Only qualified candidates will be called to participate in the further rounds of admission.

    GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted by IITs for admission into postgraduate engineering courses. There are many institutes that accept GATE scores for admission into a postgraduate diploma in engineering such as NITIE. Candidates are required to have a valid GATE score to be eligible for admission into PGDIE programme.

    CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI) also conducts its own entrance examination for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Advanced Manufacturing Technology (PGDAMT).

    PGD in Journalism

    Indian Institute of Mass Communication is one of the most prestigious institutes offering PGD in Journalism. It conducts its own entrance examination for admission into the postgraduate diploma courses.

    Many other institutes such as Xavier University also conduct online entrance test which is followed by the personal interview round.

    PGD course stands for Post Graduate Diploma course. It is quite similar to a Master's Degree Programme. Degree programs are considered of higher value as they are specified by Union Grants Commission but not Diploma and Certifications. Universities can run diploma and certification courses with due approval of their governing councils or statutory council wherever it is required.
