Course Overview

Phonetics and Phonology: A broad overview program offers a foundation to develop one's knowledge of phonetics and phonology. It provides a conceptual framework and theoretical underpinnings of sound system analysis. Candidates joining this course will learn about articulation, phonetic properties, acoustic descriptions, International Phonetic Alphabet transcriptions of different languages in the world, phonological theory, and much more. It will include Indian language examples for relevance as well.

Phonetics and Phonology: A broad overview certification is an elective undergraduate course in humanities and social sciences. It is an eight-week course designed by the IIT Guwahati faculty in association with NPTEL. This online program will be available on Swayam, an online learning platform initiated by the Government of India’s Ministry of Education.

The syllabus of the Phonetics and Phonology online course is designed by professor Shakuntala Mahanta of IIT Guwahati. The course has no prerequisites and is free for all to audit. It also offers a certification for interested candidates. There will be regular assignments and an optional offline exam at the end of the course for participants.

Eligibility Criteria

Certificate Qualifying Details

For certificate qualification, participants need to submit all assignments and score a minimum of 10/25 or above. They also need to sit for an offline exam and score 30/75 or above. The final score, which is the sum of the assignment score and the exam score, should be 40/100 or above. After fulfilling these constraints, candidates will be awarded the certificate.

Use appropriate credentials to either sign up or log in.

Application Details

The Phonetics and Phonology program has a sign-up form for enrolment and another online form for the exam. To enrol in the course, candidates need to select an unused username and password and verify their email address on the Swayam platform. In case they have an existing account, or they can use that to log in. In addition, candidates can also use their Microsoft, Google, or Facebook profiles online to sign in.

Phonetics and Phonology: A broad overview training offers an e-certificate for candidates. This e-certificate can be verified on the NPTEL website https://nptel.ac.in/.

To get the certificate, candidates must pay the exam fee, submit all the assignments and appear for an offline proctored examination at one of the exam centers designated by Swayam on their portal. They must secure the minimum passing marks in the assignments and the examination to achieve certification. There is an online form that needs to be filled to appear for the exam. All the details related to the exam, such as the centers, exam date and time, etc., will be provided to the participants beforehand.
