State quota does matter a lot in getting selected to prestigious colleges. According to your son's rank NIT Trichy is most least likely option. But, he does have a slight chance for  both the IIIT's as mentioned by you.

Chances are very less to get seat in NITs as the rank is not sufficient so you are advised to try for state Govt colleges and the private colleges which accept JEE MAIN rank.

yeah definately you will get the NIT Trichy but i can say it depends on the rank you get not on marks based while go with the core branches for NIT trichy
