The candidates should be natives of Tamil Nadu state and are eligible to apply. The outsider candidates who studied their schooling in Tamil Nadu may also apply. The children of persons who have been serving in the public sector or government sector for the last five years in Tamil Nadu may also apply for TNEA. The candidates must have passed the 12th (intermediate)or its equivalent examination from the government-recognized board with the subjects as physics, mathematics, and chemistry with the percentage as 50 % (for general candidates), 45% (for the backward class including Muslim), 40% (MBC and DNC) and 35% (for SC/ST/SCA) candidates.
