Experiencing Change

St Thomas' College Of Engineering and Technology is supposed to be among the top colleges of Kolkata because of its placements. The following are my personal views and exceptions may exsist. My expectaions from a college : Freedom to take courses which I want. (at STCET if you are lucky you may get to choose a few electives) Good professors. (at STCET there are good professors) Academic infrastructure -wifi facilities to all students, good quality and modern labs, easy access to labs, cooperative lab assistants, library.(at STCET the above mentioned things are of the lowest quality, things like wifi may not be available for all students ) Alumni - no alumus body. I have no way to contact any alumni unless i know them personally. Sports infrastructure- there is virtually no encouragement. Except for a common room with 2 TT boards and 2 carrom boards with broken bats n punctured balls, which is open between 11.30am - 7pm. A badminton court with broken racquets and no shuttle cocks(shuttle has to be bought by the students). A field in which football, cricket and volleyball is played simultaneously. An amazing basketball court which cannot be used. Inter college events- students are strictly instructed not to participate under the college name at all. Fortunately there is a annual Technical Festival organised. Student representatives- i though of participanting in student body elections , but guess what? There are no student representatives of any sort. Everything is run and managed by the management and staff.Clubs- before joining the college i had thought of joining a programming and debate club, but when i joined i realised there are NO clubs. Freedom- we have a uniform at STCET, we need to be properly shaved, well dressed, combed hair and formal shoes (for guys) and no nail polish, tied hair, hair clips /bands should be of a particular color and minimal accessories (for girls), if we want to attend the classes and avoid paying fine. Girls if need to change to casuals in college before leaving, need to take special permission todo so. If you are found clicking a pic of your class routine or any notice on the bulletin board then your phone will be confiscated, pending guardian call. Seminars and workshops - neglegible. Staff attitude towards students is unfriendly. Placements - there is no concept of a dream company. at STCET, infosys and CTS are the main recruiters In short, St Thomas' College Of Engineering and Technology is a factory for producing machines to work for the IT industry. The focus is to produce machines and not engineers.
