The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is a full-time, residential doctoral programme offering studies in different fields of management and functional areas. The programme aims to train prospective scholars to become highly skilled and innovative researchers and teachers in various aspects of management. It primarily aims at preparing students for careers as faculty members at premier academic institutions and for position outside academics requiring advanced research and analytical capabilities.
The FPM would ordinarily demand four years of residential requirements in two stages. In the first stage, the selected candidate needs to meet the course requirements over two years. During this stage, the student is given appropriate exposure to the basic discipline of management, thus preparing him/her for the thesis work in the next stage. Each student is placed under the guidance of a Faculty Advisory Committee after considering his or her field of interest.
In the first year, FPM students undertake a list of selected PGP core courses, as recommended by each functional area. The second year coursework would include specially designed doctoral courses, advanced courses and PGP elective courses in accordance to the scholars' area of interest. The student is required to ensure completion of required credits for each academic year as prescribed in the FPM student manual.
On successful completion of the course work, the student has to qualify in the comprehensive examination before taking up the thesis work.
The thesis stage is of two years. The student will select a thesis topic from among the areas: Economics; Finance; Human Resource Management; Information Systems; Marketing; Organizational Behaviour; Production, Operations & Decision Sciences and Strategic Management. The student is expected to identify a thesis topic in consultation with a thesis advisor, and work under the supervision of a Thesis Advisory Committee. On successful completion of all the requirements of the FPM, a student will be awarded the title 'Fellow in Management of XLRI'.
Fellow students are awarded a fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- per month during 1st and 2nd year and Rs. 30,000/- per month for the next two years in addition to tuition waiver, to cover living cost and other expenses. Fellowship will be paid only to full-time residential students for a maximum period of four years and no extensions will be provided. From third year, a student may work as a Research and Teaching Assistant (RTA), for which Rs. 30,000 per course will be paid extra.
A fellow student is entitled to a contingency grant of Rs. 25,000 per annum for four years and a grant of Rs. 20,000 for Data Collection during third year.
