What is Reimer-timann reaction?
Hello there
The Reimer Tiemann reaction is an organic chemical reaction where phenol is converted into an ortho hydroxy benzaldehyde using chloroform, a base, and acid workup . This reaction can also be described as the chemical reaction used for the ortho-formylation of phenols. When phenol reacts with chloroform in the presence of bases (NaOH/KOH), an aldehyde (−CHO) group gets introduced in the ring at a position ortho to the phenolic group and salicylaldehyde is formed. This reaction is called the Reimer-Tiemann reaction
