Course Overview

The Advanced Thermodynamics online program is developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. The course aims to impart high-quality knowledge on advanced concepts in Thermodynamics such as fugacity of solids and liquids, intermolecular forces between nonpolar and polar molecules, virial coefficients, Raoult’s law, Gibbs energy, thermodynamic consistency, NRTL equation, phase behavior of solid solutions, etc.

There are many cases of liquid-liquid, solid-liquid, vapor-liquid, and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in chemical engineering procedures. Assumptions of binary systems and ideal behavior are used to approach these cases; however, multi-component mixtures and non-ideality prevail in actuality. So, the Advanced Thermodynamics online course provides a step-wise understanding of the thermodynamics characteristics to deal with such equilibrium cases.

The Advanced Thermodynamics certification course is an FDP (Faculty Development Programme) approved by the AICTE. This 12-weeks-long online program is designed to help you learn the methods of solving problems connected to non-ideality in LLE, SLE, VLE, and VLLE for multi-component mixtures.

Eligibility Criteria

The prerequisite for enrolling in the Advanced Thermodynamics course by SWAYAM is that you must have an undergraduate-level qualification in a thermodynamics course.

To be eligible for the Advanced Thermodynamics certification, you must submit the assignments and clear the final exam. There will be a total of 12 assignments during the course duration. The total score for the course is 100, which gives 25% weightage to the assignments and 75% weightage to the written examination.

The score in the best of eight assignments out of the total 12 will be considered. You will be eligible for the certificate only when you score at least 30 (out of 75) marks in the final exam and 10 (out of 25) in assignments. If either of these two criteria is not fulfilled, even if your final score is 40 (out of 100), you will not receive the Advanced Thermodynamics e-certificate.

What you will learn

Knowledge of ChemistryKnowledge of engineering

The Advanced Thermodynamics training provides deep insights into essential thermodynamic properties to address real-life equilibrium situations where multi-component mixtures and non-ideality exist. By the time you complete this course, you will learn the techniques to solve problems related to non-ideality in liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE), solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE), vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE), and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium) for multi-component mixtures.

Who it is for

The Advanced Thermodynamics online course is primarily designed for individuals, students, professionals, and teachers involved in the following areas:

  • Biotechnology
  • Polymer engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Food engineering
  • Petroleum engineering
