The DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce is located in the Mahim locality of Mumbai. The Pune- based Modern Education Society (MES) is behind the establishment of this college, which was founded back in 1952. The MES has been in existence since 1932, and operates several institutes under its banner. These colleges house courses in the areas of law, commerce, management and technology. These colleges are all located in either Mumbai or Pune. The DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. This affiliation, ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission).
The DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade rating in the latter. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. Courses offered here, are right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the undergrad level, there are the programmes for, as the name of the college suggests, each of the three areas- arts, science and commerce. Thus, the BA, BSc. General and the B. Com courses are on offer. At the master’s level, one of the options is for M. Com. The MSc. may be pursued in the academic areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Information Technology and in Analytical Chemistry. Doctoral programmes may also be taken up here. The DG Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce also operates a junior college. This runs school- level courses from class XI and XII. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education (MSBSE). All the three streams of arts, science and commerce are offered here. Some vocational courses may also be taken up by the students at this level.
Research is also an important area for this college. Marine biotechnology in particular is an area, much worked on here, with several doctorates also taking place in this subject. There is a Central Research Laboratory for Basic and Applied Sciences, right within this college. A Journal Club is also operated within here. Several research projects have also been undertaken by this college. These have been done in collaboration with government or industry bodies such as– the DST (Department of Science and Technology), UGC, DOD (Department of Ocean Development), Bombay Hospital Trust and the DBT (Department of Bio Technology). Works of the faculty members have also been published across several respected national and international journals. Some of the prominent names are those of- International Journal of Chemical Sciences, Chemistry: An Indian Journal, American Journal of Pharm- Tech Research, Journal of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research, Indian Drugs and the Analytical Chemistry: An Indian Journal, besides some more.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for boys. For girls, there are PG facilities in the college’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor games. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus has adequate internet facilities. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. Convenience stores and access to public transport are available just outside the college campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
This college has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students here have been active participants in government schemes such as the NCC (National Cadet Corps) and the NSS (National Service Scheme). There are also ample facilities for students’ extra- curricular and co- curricular activities on campus. All these are handled by the several clubs and committees present here. The English Literary Association for example is known as the RUPELA. There is also the Marathi Vangmay Mandal for the promotion of Marathi language and culture. The Commerce Association is known as the CASSO.
