As you have mentioned that you have secured 18730 rank in vit. So considering the previous year cutoff it would be difficult for you to get cse in vit vellore campus. Previous year cutoff was like:

• Computer Science Engineering - 7000
• Information Technology - 12000
• Bio medical Engineering - 45000
• Civil Engineering - 35000
• Electronics and Communication Engineering - 14500
• Electrical & Electronics Engineering - 15500
• Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering - 18500
• mechanical Engineering - 19500

So you can see which branches you can get. However for other campus of vit there might be possibility to get cse.

both the colleges are private engineering colleges and in both the colleges the level of academics is very good and is appreciable. the infrastructure is also good in both the colleges and the placements are also good , both the colleges give a neck to neck competition as to get the tag of the best college in the country, however, VIT expends more on labs and libararies so, that's the only factor by which I can say that VIT is better than SRM.

In the placement drive of year 2019 at VIT Chennai, a total of around 690 companies participated. Some of the leading reputed recruiters like Microsoft, Philips, HP, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), etc. gave good salary packages to deserving students. The Highest domestic package was recorded a Whooping INR 41.6 LPA. The average package being INR 7.25 LPA. A total of more than 7000 offers were given by the recruiters. Also Internship offers were provided by companies. The Placements at VIT Chennai keep on increasing from the last few years, specially for CSE Department. The average salary offered in CSE was around INR 5.6 LPA.

On account of Covid19 pendemic this year VITEEE was cancelled and the admission for the academic year was to be given based on class 12 marks. Now the rank list has been announced.

Your son has got 10390 rank. According to previous year data the closing rank for CSE in VIT Vellore was 7000 and the closing rank for CSE in VIT Chennai was 14000. Therefore your son can get admission in CSE in VIT Chennai but not in VIT Vellore.

According to the previous year cutoff trends of VIT, Chennai with 30,171 rank you can get into branches like Civil engineering whose cutoffrank will be around40,000 , Mechanical engineering whose cutoff rank will be around 32,000, fashion Technology whose cutoff rank will be around 55,000 and Electronics and Computer engineering whose cutoff rank will be around 39,000 which means their respective branch cutoffs are more than your rank so, you will be able to get into those branches in VIT, Chennai and its hust a prediction it may not be exact as the cutoff trends may change this year due to predictable situations due to COVID-19 pandemic and no VITEE.

According to me 20k to 30 k could get good branch in VIT Chennai . To be more specific around 20 to 50 k will get cse branch in Vellore campus and lower branch in VIT campus .but it could also happen that u could get cse branch in Chennai for 20 to 30 k rank by management qouta and in 4th counselling

With this rank it is next to impossible or to be more precise impossible to get CSE that too under 1st category fees structure.

Getting under category 2 is also difficult with this rank but if your luck favors then you may get CSE under 2nd category.

No chance not at all. Sorry to dis hearten you but that's the reality.There is a cut throat  Competition for CSE in VIT especially for Vellore campus but for the sake of category 1 students from rank 4500-7500 tends to choose Chennai campus instead of Vellore in category 2.

So, either it would be 2nd or even 3rd who knows as VIT never discloses any official figure. It is from my personal experience only.
