How much we should be educated to become a psychiatric
Hello Mamata,
How to become a psychiatrist in India?
- In order to become a psychiatrist, a candidate needs to undertake a MBBS degree which lasts for five to five and a half years.
- In order to be eligible for the Bachelor degree you need to have completed your 12th with physics, chemistry and biology as your core subjects from a recognised board or institution.
- Along with this you also need to give national, state or university based examinations for admissions into medical colleges. NEET is widely accepted in most of the Indian medical colleges.
- After the completion of your Bachelor degree you will have to apply for a Master Degree. The Master Degree (M.D) lasts for three years. In order to pursue psychiatry a candidate can do their M.D in either psychiatry or neuroradiology.
- There are multiple diploma courses available in the field of psychiatry. These are Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine, Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing, Diploma in Clinical and Community Psychology, Post Graduate Dimploma in Psychiatry, Diploma in Counselling Psychology etc.
- Various Doctoral courses are also available in this field like Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, Ph.D in Psychiatric Nursing, Ph.D in Psychiatric Social Work, M.Phil in Media and Social Psychology, M.Phil in Social Work etc.
- Other than these Diploma and Master course, there is a course called Diploma of National Board Exam (DNB) organized by the National Board Examination. This course is supposedly equivalent to M.D.
Some colleges for psychiatry are:
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
- Armed Forces Medical College, Pune

Hi Mamata, hope you are doing well, Doctor of Medicine(M.D) is required to become psychiatric. You need to earn a bachelor's degree for that and pursue a medical degree as well. Moreover, 4years of training is required to become psychiatric.
I think it helps you!!!
Keep Smiling:)
Wish you good luck!:)
Dear Mamata, you should start from your 10+2. You should study Physics, Chemistry and Biology and from there on there are couple of ways that you can you pursue to become a Psychiatrist. There is a difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist. For becoming a Psychiatrist, you should appear for NEWT, qualify and then complete your MBBS. After completing the course along with the mandatory internship, you should appear for NEET PG. And you should do your Masters in Psychaitry i.e MD Psychiatry. The other way is you complete your 10+2, study either B.A/B.Sc in Psychology and then continue to complete your M.Sc Psychology. Then you should complete your Ph.D and register with the Rehabilitation Council of India to be a Psychology Counsellor. The difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist is that a Psychiatrist can prescribe medicines and perform clinical procedures but a Psychologist cannot prescribe medication.
