The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) is located in the city of Kolkata, capital of West Bengal. Kolkata has long been known as one of the commercial, as well as cultural hubs of India. The IISWBM was established in the year 19563. This makes it the oldest business school in all of India. It is also the oldest in all of south and south- east Asia regions, imparting management education programmes. The then Chief Minister of West Bengal- Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy- played a key role in its establishment. The National Doctors’ Day in India is commemorated on his birthday that falls on the 1st July.
The IISWBM has been affiliated to the University of Calcutta since 1931. This affiliation ensures the approval of the UGC (University Grants Commission). The primary course has also been ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). There are plenty of courses on offer, here at the Kolkata- based Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management from the master’s level onwards. The flagship programme is the MBA. At the same level, there is also the MSW (Master’s in Social Work). Management and social welfare have indeed been the key tenets for the college, since its inception. Within the area of management, human resources is accorded key importance here.
In addition, several diploma courses are also offered here. There is the one- year (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) in Business Analytics. The same course is also provided on an Executive MBA platform. This is taken up by working professionals seeking a skill upgrade, but unable to dedicate time for a full two- year programme. Some innovative one- year management programmes may also be availed under this scheme. They are the Post Graduate Diplomas in the areas of Sports Management, Media Management and in Supply Chain & Logistics Management. In addition, there lies the Advanced Diploma in Fire Safety Management.
Similarly, there is the Executive PGPM or Post Graduate Programme in Management. An M. Phil may also be taken up here. This is of course more research- oriented. Admissions to these courses is via any of the nationally or internationally recognized entrance exams such as CAT (Common Admission Test), MAT (Management Aptitude Test), XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test), GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) or the CMAT (Common Management Aptitude Test). Merit- based scholarships are also provided to the students, based on high scores in these entrance tests. Research is also taken up very seriously by the IISWBM. Some areas in particular are the key areas of concern.
A lot of these key areas, are related to the environment and sustainability, laying down its priorities. Some of these are- Environment Management, Ground water Management, Environment Impact Assessment, Energy Management, Social Impact Assessment, Clean Development Mechanism, Renewable Energy Management and in Health care & Hospital Management. IISWBM also helps the government bodies during their recruitment drives. Training workshops are also conducted for various corporates. These workshops also help students in connecting with the leading recruiters. The college has even identified a few companies as its Corporate partners. These companies’ trainings are held on campus, while they also help during the campus placements.
Some such leading recruiters in recent years have been the likes of- Amazon, Mother Dairy, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Nielsen, HSBC, TCS, Cognizant, NRI, ITC, RIL, Kantar, Aditya Birla Hindalco, DHL, Philips, Dabur, HUL, M Junction, Linde, Capital First, Tata Capital Limited, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, PwC and many more. Due to its significant history, the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management in Kolkata also has a rich and highly diverse alumni network. Its alumni is present across organizations and bodies at top positions. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is served at the college cafeteria. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
