So let me tell you that in this rank you have good chances to get mechanical branch at vit chennai in category 1 also. But you should also try for vit vellore because you may chances to get there at category 1 too.

But in these private colleges core branches doesn't have scope and you will end up getting placed at bulk hiring companies spending a hefty amount of 14L (category 1). So, if you have other good options like in government colleges you should take up that.

Firstly, I would like to know which exam and institute you are talking about. I'm writing this answer assuming that it's for VIT Chennai campus campus. When it comes to CSE branch, the cut-off is really high as the demand is so much. Cut-off trends change every year based on the number of students attempting the exam, number of available seats, difficulty level of the exam, etc. But when it comes to a rank around 6,000, CSE or CSE with any specialization seat in Chennai campus can be easily secured within 1st fee category itself. You can even try for VIT Vellore campus 1st or 2nd category seat as the cut-off for the same was 7000 in 2016.

Sorry to say but in your rank getting chance in VIT chennai is very poor dear. Because for VIT chennai CSE rank 8k to 9k and IT rank is 1200 and ECE rank 16k. So you are getting 30k which is higher than this all rank. But you will get VIT Vellore campus or VIT Amravati campus. So go for counselling and there you will get CSE department.

You may not get in category 1 but if you wait until the last stage of counselling. As of the previous analysis for Cse in Chennai branch is around 14000 and goes around 17000. Try to check the updates during each of the counselling so that you can even get in category 2 without any delay.

It is really unpredictable because cut-offs varies from year to year. But based on previous year's cut-offs it can be said that you have chances of getting very less branches that too Non-IT. If you want good branches like IT branches then you can try for category 5 but chances are less but you have to pay additional Rs. 2.5 Lakhs every year. In total every year you have to pay Rs. 5 Lakhs for the course. For 4 years you have to pay nearly Rs. 25 Lakhs.

At this rank you are likely to get all branches in vit Chennai according to the previous years cutoff. There is some possibility that you might not get cse branch as cut off vary every year. You can easily get all the other branches except cse in category 1.

You may not have the chances of getting seat in Computer Science Engineering in Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai. To have good chances of getting seat in CSE you will need to secure a rank below 14000. The cut off for CSE will be comparatively less than cut off for other branches so the better rank you secure the better chances you will have to secure admission to CSE. You may apply for other branches such as Civil Engineering in Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai as you have good chances of getting seat in the specified branch.
