The total number of seats in an IIM does not represent the number of seats available to General category candidates. IIMs follow the Government of India reservation policy for SC, ST, NC-OBC, EWS and PwD candidates.
Using the standard reservation framework, the broad reservation shares are 27% for NC-OBC, 10% for EWS, 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST, with PwD reservation being horizontal. Therefore, the General category share cannot simply be calculated by subtracting 5% PwD from the total.
For a rough estimate, the unreserved/General share is around 40.5% before accounting for horizontal PwD reservation. On that basis, 8,284 total seats would translate to roughly 3,355 unreserved seats. However, this should be treated as an estimate and not an official General-category seat matrix, as individual IIM admission policies and seat allocation practices can affect the final figure.
While the number of seats for IIMs remain around 8284 based on the trends of the past three years, the number of candidates appearing for the CAT each year remained between 2.58 Lakhs to 3.00 Lakhs.
