A very prestigious college to be in

    College Infrastructure

College infrastructure is pretty poor, specially the boys hostels. I wonder there will come a time when the hostels will fall upon us. The hostels are not really worth living in, very unhygienic with dogs littering all around the hostels.

    Academics

I am studying Mechanical Engineering because I have an interest on the subject. However, our curriculum is not updated according to the present requirements of the industry. Many of the softwares are not taught in college and we are asked to learn it from somewhere else.

    Placements

Placements are pretty decent with CST, IT, ETC, MIN getting around 80% to 100% placement. However, The core departments like Mechanical, Electrical have around 70% to 75% placements. Civil has even less, around 60%. Metallurgy and Aerospace varies from year to year. This year the highest salary was offered by Microsoft of 36 lpa.

    Value for Money

For a person without any quota, it costs around 1.8 lakhs per year. Considering the infrastructure and technological developments of the college, I feel it is not a great value for money. Nevertheless, the placements are decent.

    One of The Best NIT!!!

    College Infrastructure

IIEST, Shibpur boasts of its large alumni base and rich history. It is the second oldest college of engineering in our country. It's a lush green campus that will make anyone love the campus. But along with all this, there are a lot of loopholes there in the college. The college lacks modern amenities a bit. It lacks the modern classroom facilities. I'm not saying, that IIEST, Shibpur doesn't have modern amenities but still, it's in limited quantity. Living areas are quite spacious but not tidy.

    Academics

There is not a single doubt when it comes to the academic section of the institute. This institute is basically for those students, who want to pursue research as a career option and also for learning enthusiasts. The institute has highly qualified professors and staff working day and night for the student's welfare. Along, with that IIEST, Shibpur also serves the nation by doing excessive and consistent research.

    Placements

The placement scenario is average because most of the students prefer to choose higher studies or research lines. Most of the students from core departments successfully clear the GATE examination. So, most of the students are placed in the government sector rather than the private sector.

    Value for Money

₹71,000(₹3,000-one time, refundable) is the institute fee and ₹29,500(₹1,000-one time, refundable) is the hostel fee. So, let me tell you something regarding the WiFi facility and food quality as well. Food quality is average it'll not going to satisfy your taste buds. WiFi offers speed of 200mbps or sometimes 1mbps too. You'll feel that you're not getting that much for which you're paying for, at last, it's not that worthy regarding the facility.

    Campus Life

IIEST, Shibpur, is a renowned college with the NIRF rank 19. The professors are highly qualified. The campus is lush green. There is a large library also, the institute hall is the place where most of the workshops or events take place. Campus life is very good. Technical fests, as well as, departmental fests, also take place with this, there is the annual function. Basically, IIEST, Shibpur offers a balanced lifestyle with some sense of diversity.

    Others

At last, I'd like to say, that, IIEST, Shibpur, is one of the best NIT and research institute that will offer you a great lifestyle, great opportunity, great academics and last but not the least, it'll boost your personality and career as well. Since it has a large alumni base, so, you'll have a great chance to succeed in any form. That's all!!! Good Luck!!!

    Good

    College Infrastructure

Being 163 years old, the institute is still under development of infrastructure. The lab facilities are average. however, I think the engineering departments have well furnished laboratories. The library is good. Hostels, department buildings and library has free wifi. I am not sure about boy's hostel but girls hostel are well furnished and regular hygiene is maintained.

    Academics

I am pursuing M.Sc in Chemistry. The classes are regular in our department. Professors here are quite co-operative and supportive. They're always ready to help you with any trouble. As far as being job-ready is concerned, since M.Sc is not a professional course, students here are primarily told to work for clearance of NET and GATE and focus on their research career rather than jobs.

    Placements

To my knowledge, placements are offered to the engineering students but chances for M.Sc students are almost negligible. If you've cleared JAM and want a job right after your masters and do not want to go for Ph.d then coming here would not be the right choice.

    Value for Money

Academic fees is 19,500 per semester for OBC/GEN M.Sc students. And most probably 7000-8000 for SC/ST. Hostel and mess fees is 25,500 per semester. Considering the regularity of classes and labs, yes the money is worth. And mess food is sometimes good sometimes bad. But you've the right to complain in case of any issues with mess food.

    Campus Life

College campus is a treat to the eyes for nature lover. However, some parts are not properly maintained and students often prefer not to go around those areas covered with thick bushes. Regarding the activities, students can enroll for gym, basketball, swimming, dance and music.

Admire the way my college works to overcome the shortcomings

    Verified Review
    College Infrastructure

The classrooms are equipped with proper sound system so that students can hear the professors, even from the last benches. Rooms are spacious with proper ventilations. Laboratories are equipped with the latest equipments and have friendly lab assistants. Well-equipped library, modern basketball court, swimming pool and two large playgrounds. Though I am a day-scholar, my friends say that mess food is edible and the menu is ever changing. Also there are four on-campus canteens to fill our tummy.

    Academics

Presently I am a second semester student in the department of Computer Science and Technology. The lack of access to computer during my childhood has urged me to take up this stream. All the professors are highly qualified, almost all of them have a PhD degree. Tutorial guides lab assistants are equally helpful. Our curriculum is regularly updated as required. Some professors use modern tools like Google classroom. Research projects are integral part of our college.

    Placements

Placements have improved a lot in the recent times, with students getting both on-campus and off-campus offers. Placement statistics have not been completely updated due to ongoing corona crisis. However, the highest till date is 42 lpa from Microsoft. Most importantly, even during these difficult times our Director Sir has assured students not to worry and that on-campus internships and industry-collaborations are being carried out.

    Value for Money

The tuition fees cost ₹62,500 per semester. However there are concessions per the rules of MHRD. Yes, when it comes to money's worth, there is none better than an institution of national importance.

    Campus Life

With an area of 123 acres, the beauty and greenery of our campus never fails to amaze us. Three lakes, meditation spot, building with Gothic design and many more. Everyone is supportive here. There are many clubs where we can hone our skills. Entrepreneurship Development Cell is doing a fabulous job as well. Located in well-connected area, the students have easy access to shopping malls, restaurants, coaching centers, etc. Our campus is absolutely safe with tight security. There is a hospital.

    Others

A small suggestion. I have seen many students making unnecessary complaints about their college. They have to understand it is a college campus and not a five star hotel. It's high time they come out of their honeymoon period.

I am enjoying my college life.

    College Infrastructure

The college has a good infrastructure and the modern facilities. The classrooms and hostels are well equipped with advance technologies like WiFi, Smart classrooms, Projectors etc. Inside the campus there are two large playgrounds. There is a library with various collection of books from all over the world. The campus is well maintained by the college authorities. The food in the hostels is good and hygienic.

    Academics

The college follows the academic curriculum according to MHRD Govt of India. I am pursuing my Btech in Mining Engineering because it is one of best department in college and the placement is also very good. The Professors are very much experienced and help us in every possible way.

    Placements

The college has a very good Placement record. Almost 70-80 percent students were placed every year. The highest package goes with Computer science or Information technology branch. The college is very much supportive for the placement of the students. The median package is 6,00,000.

    Value for Money

The fees structure is same like other NITs. I am satisfied with the current fees structure of the college.

    Campus Life

The college has a very beautiful campus. It is located near botanical garden. The Environment of the campus is pollution free. There is a hospital also inside the campus in case of emergency of the students. Security 24 hours present. There are many societies for extra circular activities like music, drama,Quiz etc.

i m currently studying in first year, for now everything is

    College Infrastructure

it doesn't have very good infrastructure, but its nice and its changing. we are provided projeccter ,proper linghts, fan, ac etc. the living places are not so clean and hygienic and the food is also not good.

    Academics

all professors are excellent in there work, they are well qualified and helping, specially hods who helps a lot while placement. professors are very punctual at their times but are understanding too .

    Placements

placement are quite good in all the branches except aerospace, i would suggest don't go for aerospace if u don't wanna do higher studies. and about other branches the placement is good due to world wide alumni network.

    Value for Money

it is as same as any other nit. i m a general category student , so yes i feel like m paying much more than the students who have reservation but there are many who are like me so it doesn't feel much.

    Campus Life

campus life is very good here. there are so many time limits about entering in the hostel, but nobody cares when u break it.but the other things are boring means its really old culture, there will not be may parties or short fest even in a month.

    Others

i would like to say the college is good for study and placement but, at the same time students are not changing their culture they just follow what their seniors have done from 1856 ?, which is so boring.

    Academics

Academic is excellent . I like it so much because quality of teaching is really very good here. Faculties are very supportive to the students and overall development is the basis of academic here. Curriculum is also updated here.

    Placements

Good placement records. About 70% of students are placed. Computer science, information technology and mining Engineering lead in placement graphs. Average salary is about six lakhs and highest is about forty laks per annum.

    Value for Money

Yes, fees is manageable. It is about two lakhs per year. But I think I'm getting my money's worth here in the college. As facilities are good, academic is excellent and faculties are very good. So fees is used properly.

    Campus Life

Campus Life is awesome here. There are several activities in which students can spend their leisure time. More than 15 clubs are operated in the campus for the students . These clubs also help in the development of personality of the students.

    Others

I'm enjoying my life here in the college. I have seen some development in my personality and thinking after joining the college. It would be a lovely opportunity for a guy to come and study here. It is one of the oldest engineering institute in the country.

    A campus with a history

    Verified Review
    College Infrastructure

IIEST provides with all the necessary infrastructure. The classrooms and labs are clean, well light, and well equipped. Our library holds a huge collection of 12000+ books and dissertation papers. The campus hosts four fully functional canteens along with a CCD and a Nescafe outlet. We also have a dedicated sports centre. The hostels are decent but some of them require renovation which we are working on. Overall, IIEST provides you a good infrastructure that ensures a great learning experience.

    Academics

I'm a student in the civil engineering department, but I also have friends in every other department on campus. Most of our teachers are extremely qualified and passionate about education, barring a few. They make you love the subject rather than cram needlessly. IIEST treats education as a priority and provides great exposure to a variety of projects. However the curriculum is outdated and has little relevance in the industry. Hopefully that'll change soon.

    Placements

The placements have been good so far on campus. Our highest package for 2019 was 40 LPA, offered by Microsoft to three of our students, 2 of them from our Computer science and 1 of them from our IT department respectively. The average package for core branches has been around 6-7 LPA, and non-core has been around 10-12 LPA. We have an active placement cell that ensures great participation from the industry in every placement season.

    Value for Money

You can find the exact fee structure on our official website. I certainly feel it's value for money considering it charges considerably lower than other colleges of similar stature such as IITs and BITS.

    Campus Life

We have an extremely vibrant campus life. We have a wide array of clubs for you to choose from, be it dancing, dramatics, writing or singing. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in a multitude of competitions and other events organised by these clubs. The campus is extremely safe with a dedicated hospital that caters to students 24*7 with a doctor always on call. The campus is located very close to the Hooghly river and is serene filled with greenery.

IIEST Shibpur is the second oldest technical institute in our country. It has been through quite a journey transitioning between phases of highs and lows owing to the regional political climate. But the one thing that has remained constant is its dedication towards developing professionals who'll serve the nation and make our country proud. IIEST may not be perfect but it'll provide you a home, and a platform to launch your career. I invite you to be a part of our family. Come, join us.

    College Infrastructure

A big central library is here. We have a two sports grounds. We have one gymnasium and courts for badminton, volleyball and basketball. Wi-Fi is available in all the department and labs are completely equipped.

    Academics

Currently pursuing B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The curriculum is updated and matches with GATE and other competitive examinations. The teachers are experienced and are experts of their respective fields.

    Placements

The placement of college is excellent. Maximum of the students get placed from the on-campus recruitment. 90% of the students in my department were placed this year. This is the scenario in all the other departments.

    Value for Money

Since it is categorised as NIT and is one of the INI having rank of 19 among all the engineering colleges of India, there should be no question for the value of money. Obviously it is worth it and scholarships are also provided to the needy students.

    Campus Life

The campus is full with Greenery. It is at the bank of Hooghly river and Botanical Garden is near it. The campus life is full with life and students feel very safe inside it. There is a hospital inside the campus itself to handle the emergency cases

    Others

If you really want to opt for IIEST Shibpur and are not getting NIT Trichi, Surathkal or Allahabad, don't think twice. The place will provide you more than just knowledge and placement. The life here will be unforgettable.

Have a question related to IIEST Shibpur ?

Yes, NIT Agartala does offer branch changes to first-year B.Tech students. The process for 2025-26 is likely to be similar to previous years, involving an online application portal, CGPA-based merit ranking, and seat availability considerations. While IIEST Shibpur may have closed its branch change option this year, NIT Agartala generally provides this opportunity.

I have got 500129 JEE rank in 2025. Can I get admission in BTech CSE in IIEST as West Bengal is my home quota.

Based on the JEE Main 2024 cutoff data for IIEST Shibpur, securing a B.Tech CSE seat with a CRL rank of 500129, even with the West Bengal home state quota, appears to be highly improbable .

Looking at the previous year's closing ranks for the general category under the home state quota, the cutoff for B.Tech CSE at IIEST Shibpur was significantly lower than your rank. For example, in the final rounds of JoSAA counselling in 2024, the closing rank for general home state candidates for CSE was around 17609 . While cutoffs can vary slightly each year, a difference of this magnitude makes admission very difficult.

While having the home state quota provides some advantage by reserving 50% of the seats for candidates from West Bengal, the competition for popular branches like CSE at a prestigious institute like IIEST Shibpur remains very high. The number of CSE seats is limited, and many candidates with much better ranks would also be vying for them under the home state quota.

Therefore, it is advisable to be realistic about your chances for B.Tech CSE at IIEST Shibpur with your current rank. You should definitely explore other engineering colleges that might be a better fit for your rank, considering both state government and private institutions in West Bengal and other states. Participating actively in the JoSAA and CSAB counselling processes and keeping an open mind about other branches could lead you to a good engineering college.

I got 1.6 lakh rank in jee mains 2025 and sc rank is 7400.My hs is West Bengal. Can I get mechanical engineering in iiest shibpur or any other good college?

    Hello,

Based on your SC category rank of 7,400 in JEE Main 2025, it might be difficult to get Mechanical Engineering at IIEST Shibpur . Last year, the closing rank for SC candidates from other states in Mechanical Engineering was around 6,706.

However, you can still consider other good colleges where your rank may be sufficient. Institutes like NIT Agartala, NIT Meghalaya, or IIITs in newer locations often have higher closing ranks for SC category students. It's a good idea to check the previous year's cutoffs for these colleges to see where you might have a chance.

Also, keep an eye on the counselling rounds, as sometimes seats become available in later rounds.

You can use our JEE Main College Predictor tool to predict which colleges you can get based on your score.

Best of luck with your admissions!
