Obviously you can appear for GATE. There is no boundaries for IITs, NITs or private college students.

Eligibility for GATE:-

1. Indian nationality
2. No age limit
3. Candidates must have passed graduation in engineering/technology or Master’s degree in any relevant science subject.
4. Candidates in pre-final or final year of their qualifying

If your ews rank is 20k then unfortunately you can not get into any NIT OR IITS

Although if you wait till spot rounds then u might get into some of the least ranked NIT and that too the lower branches.

JoSAA Counselling Registration 2021 will tentatively start in October/ November 2021. Joint Seat Allocation Authority (or JoSAA) is responsible for the counselling process for 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST, 26 IIITs and 29 other GFTIs. Getting IIT is not possible without clearing JEE ADV. But you have slight chances to have a NIT . Actually th ere is no simple YES or NO at this rank, however, quite possibly you might get a NIT at 80,000 rank, contingent upon your home state and inclination

To take admission in any IIIT or NIT your rank must be under 20K so that you can expect some colleges otherwise you may get in the CSAB round but still chances are very less.

Yes, you have the fair chances to get  a NIT. But top NITs are not possible . NITs like Nit mijoram, nit Nagaland ,nit surathkal , nit Warangal,nit Calicut, nit Tiruchirapalli etc is possible for you.
