Mining Engineering at IIT KGP is a really very risky decision according to me. You should not expect any placement prospects in Core as very few companies like Vedanta, Tata Steel , ExxonMobil and Coal India, recruit Mining engineers from KGP, that too in limited numbers. Of course in non core sectors like Analytics, Machine Learning and Consultancy, IIT KGP Provides you infinite opportunities.

Besides this you can also change your branch after first year, though you must not rely on it.You have options to pursue a Minor or Micro Specialization in another Department besides Majoring in Mining Engineering. In case you develop interest in Entrepreneurship or Finance in first year, you have an opportunity to pursue M.Tech in Financial Engineering and Engineering Entrepreneurship, which provides with excellent opportunities in training and placement.

In fact many students from Mining Engineering also go to Grad Schools in Australia and US post Bachelors and many also pursue MBA from IIMs after B.tech. Curriculum of Mining is such that it gives a lot of time to the student to pursue his interests, prepare for competitive exams as well as learn new technologies.

Overall if you come to IIT KGP, it is your responsibility to cultivate your interest and nurture them to supremity. If you are ready and confident to dedicate your efforts and ace campus life, you deserve a place in KGP and must choose that.

If you are not too confident, I believe NIT Calicut EEE provides better Core and Circuital Placement prospects in Electricial Engineering, and you must go there.

Hello dear student

Basically both IIT are really good but If compare the both branch metallurgy and mechanical engineering than the scope of mechanical engineering is better in present or future also so I think mechanical engineering will be good in IIT BHU .

You can use visit and compare your college.

If still have any queries than please post your queries or comments.

Hope that's helpful

Best of luck

I suggest you to go for NIT Trichy as it is one of the top NIT'S which is equally comparable to IIT'S and to choose ECE branch will be better for your future. If i say in terms of placements you will get easily with good amount of effort. But overall professors are nice and whether you are in any college professors are only guide you what matters is you self study to prepare yourself for the industry.

Ocean engineering and naval architect i don't think there is much scope even in IIT'S. IF You have other options like already you have NIT Trichy ECE go for that. it will surely help you in future!

best of luck!

Hello Aspirant,

See as per your rank you can easily get Instrumentation branch in IIT Kharagpur and ECE branch in IIT Guwahati as per previous year's cut-offs which you can check out from the link given below :-

https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/jee-advanced-cutoff-for-iits

So now let us discuss that what you should opt for future. If you are placement oriented and just want to get placed in any MNC or want to go in PSUs through GATE then ECE branch in IIT Guwahati will be the best option but if you are research oriented and want to have a deeper knowledge of different devices and machines and also want to go for Higher studies after graduation then Instrumentation will surely have a upper hand on you.

So now you can decide where you want to go. For further doubts you can use comment section.

Hey friend!

I think you should try to opt mechanical engineering from IIT BHU if you want to be branch specific as mechanical engineering is better branch than metallurgy . But if you want to be college specific then you should go for IIT Kharagpur as it is one of oldest IIT'S . Placements are very good in both colleges but IIT Kharagpur is ahead of IIT BHU . Listen your heart friend .

All the best friend!

As far as Non Core/IT/Finance/Consultancy Placements are concerned, both being top IITs provide substantial opportunities with good Pay scales and maximum packages lying between 14-20 LPA.

Core Placements for both your options are Bleak. Last year as far as I remember only 3 Companies lined up for Ocean Engineering Students, ExxonMobil, Indian Register of Shipping and Oceanergy. IIT Bombay Environmental too faces same dearth of Core opportunities.

I would advise you to forgo the top 5 IITs and target the Next 5 IITs. You will surely get either of Chemical/Metallurgical/Industrial at IIT Roorkee, BHU, Hyderabad, Indore and Guwahati.

Another choice can be taking a Core Branch like Mechanical , Petroleum or Chemical at IIT ISM Dhanbad.Core placements at IIT ISM are at an all time high there.

I think you should choose MNIT CSE. I dont think Ocean Engineering is a branch of your choice and secondly Branch Change Scheme is very unpredictable and unprobable especially this year.

IITM has already decided to temporarily close the Branch Slide scheme this year.MNIT CSE will provide you with good opportunities and prsopects. Located near IT Hubs at Delhi NCR, itself provides a sea of opportunities. Companies like Mircosoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Honeywell are regular recruiters at MNIT CSE.

Another option you can consider is taking considerable branches at the next 7 IITs ( Rank 8-14).

I believe you have the following options

Chemical/Metallurgical Engineering IIT BHU

Mechanical/Chemical IIT Ropar Mandi BBSR

Chemical IIT Gandhinagar IIT Patna IIT ISM

Electrical IIT Dharwad Bhilai Palakkad Jodhpur

Metallurgical Engineering IIT Indore Hyderabad

The above options are fair and provide standard placements and plenty of opportunities being IITs.

Hello aspirant,

The level of difficulty in JEE exam paper varies from one IIT to other IIT and from year to year. Yes, the question paper is set by different IITs each year but you can't assume the level of difficulty from IIT Kharagpur or any other IIT. So please, don't assume such thing rather you should go through the concepts properly and prepare and clear your doubts. See, if you don't prepare properly, whoever IIT set up the question it will always feel difficult and if you have prepared accordingly, you won't feel difficult.

Hope, this answer helped you. Good Luck!
