Students primarily choose colleges / academic institutions for the academic programs and career development that they offer. But, IIT Kharagpur facilities and infrastructure play an equally important role in this decision-making process. Students mainly look for good accommodation on / near campus, accessibility of the college location, good learning facilities like classrooms and labs, and access to recreation through sports, auditoriums.
Due to the sheer size of the campus, most of the students prefer to travel within the campus on bicycles. In addition to all facilities available on campus, markets are present within 5 kilometers outside the campus which are accessible by private cars or auto rickshaws.
The various clubs and societies at IIT Kharagpur come under the Technology Students Gymkhana. They are as follows:

Technology Aquatic Society: The Technology Aquatic Society offers swimming as one of the basic courses. The pool is open from morning to late evening for sports, exercise and relaxation.
TFPS: Technology Filmmaking and Photography Society is the place to be if you are a student interested in photography and film making.
Technology Dance Society: They participate in various dance competitions and also have regular workshops for dance practice.
Pravah: A hindi dramatics society of IIT Kharagpur, Pravah organises plays on and off campus.
Encore: The official English Dramatics Society of IIT Kharagpur, Encore is an integral part of the Dramatics subcommittee.
Druheen: The official name of the Bangla Technology dramatic society (BTDS), Druheen is one of the oldest societies of IIT Kharagpur.
Prasthanam: The Telugu Dramatic Society, Prasthanam is a part of the dramatic sub-committee.
Technology Robotix Society: This society is the locus for all the robotics-related activities at the IIT Kharagpur campus.
Communique: This club was born to improve the soft skills and communications skills of IIT Kharagpur students. Through its activities, this club ensures that bright students at IIT Kharagpur do not miss out on excellent placement and career opportunities due to a lack of communication skills
Business Club: This club has various activities like financial literacy program, business quiz, etc. on the campus.
Technology Adventure Society: This club is mainly engaged in organising activities outside the IIT Kharagpur campus
Eastern technical Music Society: This is a club of all the enthusiastic musicians on campus. They keep the spirit of classical music alive
Western Classical Music Society: This club aims at engaging with the diverse music cultures in western music

IIT KGP is well known for its extensive residential facilities. Spread over a sprawling 2100 acres, IIT Kharagpur houses almost 10,000 students.
There are 16 Halls of Residences around campus
Accommodation for students at IIT Kharagpur is provided through 21 Residential Halls named after eminent Indian personalities like Lalbahadur Shastry, Indira Gandhi, Vallabhai Patel, Zakir Hussain amongst others. There are 16 halls for boys and 5 halls for girls and halls for residential scholars who may want to live with their families on campus. All accommodation halls are equipped with 24-hour electricity, mess facility, high-speed Wi-Fi, and LAN.
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur’s Central Library is one of the largest technology libraries in Asia. It houses more than 3.5 lakh printed resources, has access and subscription to over 100 national and international print journals, and has a collection of thesis, micro-documents, CDs, video cassettes, and reports. There are more than 1,35,000 e-books that can be accessed by students, staff, faculty, and researchers. E –resources can be accessed via login credentials for remote access.
Games and sports are not only important for success in studio but it is important for success in every walks of our life. IIT Kharagpur wishes that students perform the best in every field and hence provides its students with world class facilities for sports and games as well. The campus has two stadiums namely Jnan Ghosh and Tata Sports Complex for various games like Hockey, Football, Cricket and Athletics. Apart from these, the campus also has a fully modernized Aquatic Center for sports like Swimming and Water Polo. The Student Activity Center - Technology Students' Gymkhana also hosts, an Indoor Squash Court, Indoor Badminton Courts, Pool Tables, Tennis Courts, and a fully modernized Gymnasium, facilities for Weightlifting, Basketball Courts, Volleyball Court and Table Tennis.
Also every Hall of Residence encourages its hall boarders to actively participate in all the sports events conducted throughout the year as a part of the General Championships. Some halls even provide sports facilities of their own to their boarders so that they stay fit and practice daily bringing laurels to the hall as well as IIT Kharagpur. The Institute also encourages active participation of the students in sports especially through events like the General Championship and the prestigious annual Inter-IIT Sports Meet. Inter IIT sports meet is zealously organized every year in which brilliant athletes from each IIT participateto make their institute proud. Just to give you an insight into the scale of the events, the chief guest of last Inter IIT opening ceremony was Sachin Tendulkar.
Numerous in-house eateries serve the demands of residents. Some eateries are open overnight, while some serve hot food from early morning itself to best cater to the peoples' convenience. Within campus are restaurants like Billoos (famous for its Punjabi food), Dreamland-Sahara, Hot Bite, Heritage etc. Each Hall of Residence has its own Canteen apart from the mess.
The JCB, HJB and VS Mens Hall Canteens allow ladies too to sit and enjoy meals. 'Eat-KGP' a virtual collaboration of all the in-campus eateries provides room delivery of food through online orders.

IIT Kharagpur keeps the health & wellness need of the campus community as its top priority, and constantly strives to improve and upgrade the existing facilities and the services. Extra Academic Activity (EAA) is an important component of UG curriculum at IIT Kharagpur with NSS, NCC, NSO under its fold.
The holistic well being of our student community, encompassing both physical and mental health, is of the highest priority to the Institute. In pursuance of our commitment towards ensuring that, we have set up the Students' Counselling Centre, to provide any required assistance to students who may be experiencing emotional or psychological conditions that pose a hindrance to their regular activities on campus.
The Counselling Centre offers a broad range of services including psychological assessment, individual therapy, group therapy, and medication and management to promote mental health, life skills, emotional resilience and overall well being of the student community.
Full-time clinical psychologists and a visiting psychiatrist are available for consultation at the Centre. The Centre has also initiated an outreach programme to create a team of sensitized wing representatives from each Hall of Residence who can reach out to students in need.
The Centre addresses problems associated with stress, time management, motivational issues, relationship difficulties, impulse control issues, and learning difficulties. It also helps students experiencing significant depression, anxiety, mood swings, or other thought disorders.
Apart from individual sessions, the Centre plans to conduct group sessions to address life skills such as assertiveness, problem solving, anger management, self awareness, and interpersonal relationships.
The Counselling Centre also functions as a coordinating point for crisis intervention.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is committed to provide quality healthcare services to its faculty, employees, and students using modern and cost effective techniques and technologies, and through a dedicated and humane approach. In accordance with the above policy, B C Roy Technology Hospital, owned and managed by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, provides Primary Health Care comprising of curative, preventive and health promotion services.
At present, B C Roy Technology Hospital is located centrally within the IIT Kharagpur campus. The facility has 32 beds, including a 2 Bedded ICU, Cabins and Isolation Ward. Through its Out Patient Department (OPD), Indoor Wards and Emergency Unit, B C Roy Technology Hospital provides 24x7 uninterrupted health care services to the campus community. On an average approximately 7000 patients attend the OPD at B C Roy Technology Hospital every month. The hospital has a round the clock pharmacy inside it. It is also equipped with a Video-conferencing facility for telemedicine.
Biomedical waste from B C Roy Technology Hospital is regularly and properly disposed of by an arrangement with the services of West Bengal State Government Environment Department
