it is a professional college with professional training and builds you up for that life. It is an institute of national importance which comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Though the schedule is a bit hectic but hostel life and events sums up the fun times.

Best in India for the course

This is an Institute of National Importance under an act of parliament, which makes it at the likes of IITs . It is arguably the best Urban Planning College in whole of Asia too. I got into this college by getting a rank of AIR 947 in IIT JEE paper 2 that is for Architectural and design stream . Getting admitted in this college is hard but it is worth the struggle, the international prestige of this college is what makes it so special. The faculty and the environment is the beat, however it still struggles in having a decent infrastructure. It is located in Indraprastha Estate, one of the most prime locations of New Delhi, neighbouring institutions like Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Public Administration, ITPI, Indian Medical Association, DDA Vikas Minar, Delhi Police Headquarters etc. All in all, the exposure that one gets on this college is amazing and it is acquitted with the best faculty of the nation.

While S.P.A. New Delhi is the best college to study undergraduate architecture in the country, it could use a re-modelling of the curriculum and the infrastructure to compete with the current global trends in architectural design pedagogy. I believe that by being open to new processes and ideas in design, the students can benefit two-fold from the excellent knowledge base of the faculty. However, more emphasis needs to be given on the mental and physical well-being of the student in general, and their mindset towards architectural practice in particular. However, the student diversity is very refreshing, and allows us to learn from different cultures.

Better and worse than expected.

My first impression of the college, like everyone else, was about the size of the campus. Growing up, I had seen several movies and shows depicting the average daily life of college, invariably, the college itself was shown to have large a large campus, sprawling wide spaces and multiple hangout spots. SPA Delhi, located on the corner of one of the most prominent areas of Delhi is a tiny plot in the vast urban spread of Delhi. With a few old trees surrounding the parking lot, a common meeting area of about 800 sq m and a maggie spot located on the footpath outside, the college fails to meet one expectation. However, once you become a part of the college, you realize that there is much more than meets the eye. The college has 4 plots scattered throughout Delhi, the Planning department at ITO, the architecture department located a few 100 meters from the ITO campus, the hostel wing at Maharani Bagh and the area of the campus at Vasant Kunj where some events and sports meet take place. The infrastructure of the college is decent while the hostels leave much to be desired, especially in terms of availability of rooms. That being said, SPA Delhi is one of the best colleges one can study in. With a nominal fee, which has increased slightly since attaining the title of ' Institute of National importance' , it is quite affordable with a number of scholarship and 'special needs' help to be given. The faculty for bachelors of planning, which used to be the most diverse and distinguished aspect of the college is slowly deteriorating in quality. This is largely due to the retirement of the founding fathers of the department. It is hard for anyone to reach their expertise and passion. A few gems can still be found every year among the professors. As important as the faculty, is the student body. In this course, one learns more from their classmates and seniors, than one does from textbooks. The student body is a dynamic and intelligent crowd. A lot of passion and ambition is seen. Some of it can be a bit misplaced, especially in regards to the bureaucratic state of the government and the Indian educational system itself. The motto of the students is to work hard, and party harder. The Friday nights of the college are renowned and so is the unity of the student body. Words can't express the bond that is created among the classmates, especially since the course requires one to work predominantly in groups and travel across the country with them. Although the college has no placement cell, job opportunities are easily available if one is in contact with their seniors. The problem arises about the profession, planning as a profession has limited re-reimbursement. A precedence has been set where planners from a previous generation are willing to work at nominal rates. This has severely impacted the profession. But there is still hope. the college administration and the student body are working towards spreading awareness about the issue. If you decide to join SPA Delhi, be forewarned, it will be a hard journey, but the experience will be amazing. You will grow, not only as a person but as a professional, a humanitarian, a philanthropist, a jugaadu, a political activist and so much more. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

One of its kind and best for planning

Having completed my B.Planning from this premier institute was a task on its own. Every experience was one of its kind which I doubt is possible to go through if you study from any other institute in the country. SPA D being the first college in the country to offer planning education at undergraduate level provides a distinct advantage. The biggest of them which are worth mentioning are the available information/knowledge of books and eminent field experts/teachers. Another advantage when combined the aforesaid advantage is the very location of the institute. Location not just in the almost center of Delhi but Delhi itself. Delhi, over the decades, has gone through a drastic transformation which makes its study a once in a lifetime experience. The blend of planned development along with unplanned development which at times is haphazard provides a stark yet functional picture of a city. The number of administrative offices and departments concerned with planning makes prepares the students for the future, in fact, they live the future during studies. Planning from SPA D is much more than the theory and classroom work, regular and diverse field visits within same city and in proximity makes it possible to get maximum exposure possible. Delhi being the National Capital provides a number of facilities and services which facilitate the work and field trips. On addition of everything which this institute offers sums to an enriching and mind-blowing experience during which you live, enjoy, learn, experience, watch, realise and understand some very less known and unknown facts about the city and course. Having faced almost everything in a safe and controlled environment during college time helps students to mould, adjust and prepare themselves to excel in the chosen field. Having studied at SPA D is something which you can understand and relate to only if you get a chance to be here.
