An average new IIT in India which needs improvement

Posted on 18 Apr' 18 by rajdeep Konar
Batch of 2020 | B.Tech Chemical Engineering
Infrastructure: 3.5 / 5.0 Academic buildings are more or less modest. Many lecture halls are old- fashioned with the traditional blackboard & chalk (which is not bad at all). Though many of these support projectors, not many professors make use of it. The acoustics within the lecture halls is average & students sitting at the back generally find it difficult to grasp the lectures efficiently. Lack of air conditioning makes it seemingly impossible to sit in these halls during the scorching hot summers. The hostels are spacious with lush green gardens boasting awesome scenic beauty. You could even find peacocks roaming in gardens of certain hostels during dawn. This proximity to nature is a thing you'll not find in many other institutes. The rooms, although small, are reasonably habitable. The bathrooms & toilets on the other hand, mostly remain dirty (with exception of few hostels). The absence of western style toilets, frowned upon by many students hailing from metropolitan cities, can pose a big inconvenience for physically disabled students. The common rooms are quite spacious, (for God knows what reason) equipped with a single LCD TV and one - two T.T. tables. The biggest problem faced by the students is absence of proper LAN infrastructure in the hostels. It is a big hassle at the beginning of the session, to manually set-up LAN cables from the warden office to respective rooms, made even worse by the petty fight over who gets the 8 LAN-ports of the switch in the warden office. Icing over the cake, the students have to struggle with poor LAN (speed as low as 1 kbps) all throughout the year. Miserly attempts to revive the non-functional LAN are made but mostly in vain. Faculty & Research: 2.0 / 5.0 Ah, the faculty! The quality of faculty, again with the exception of few, is bordering on the line between average and below average. Many professors are incompetent when compared to that of sister IITs. Hence, the teaching in general is poor. Majority of the professors are downright arrogant and instead of delivering quality education they like to believe that they have a bunch of idiotic, drunkard and irresponsible students to teach to. The methodology of checking answer scripts in the institute has puzzled the students for a long time. Some say that a random number generator is deployed by the professors to award marks while others maintain that you have to have nice handwriting and the ability to write long answers (incoherent gibberish would do) to extract good marks. Anyways, the true story is still not known and students claim inconsistency in their credits. Research output of IIT (BHU) is, again, quite low. Large percentage of the faculty is involved in administrative tasks and focus on research is less. Even the existing research is not highly recognized in international journals. Neither are there many promising research projects currently running in the institute nor the research facilities are state-of-the-art. So, in a nutshell, it is definitely not one of the places one might consider for quality research. Facilities: 3.5 / 5.0 I would segregate the various aspects: a. Library: Many a times people have struggled to find books which they need in the library. It may be due to highly disorganized way in which the library keeps the books. One can find a mathematics books in the physics section, a chemistry one in computer science's section etc. There's no specific place to look for a particular book even with the reference from book catalog. Besides, there seems to be a dearth of popular course-books. Hence, their availability is governed by the first-come-first basis. The prescribed course-books disappear within a week after commencing of the semester. The library has two sections: one for the use of General students and one for SC/ST. The general students can issue three books at a time while the SC/ST can issue four - a logic which surpasses my comprehensive abilities. b. Internet: Some claim, that BHU has one of the best LAN infrastructure among the universities in India. However, the end-users - the students, fail to agree with this supposition. The Computer Center is the provider of the LAN. Internet is accessed through various proxies. On some proxies, the officials have banned social networking sites and porn by an algorithm which operates on a string matching basis. For instance, if there is a specific keyword (like 'sex') in the page you have requested, the page would not be displayed. Since, these are the proxies that are available in the hostels, students adopt anonymity software to bypass the firewall and have full-fledged access to the Internet. The result being highly trafficked network and a 'Sorry..' page popping up on a simple Google search. The LAN in the academic buildings, on the contrary, is quite fast and reliable. c. Office Hours: Where other institutes provide 24*7 lab facility, here you'll find a lock in every department after 6 o' clock in the evening which is a deterrent for students motivated for research. Besides, the library, which should be open for 24 hrs is closed down at 10.00 pm. This may not be big factor in normal days, but is a serious drawback during examination days. Student Activities & Campus Life: 4.0 / 5.0 The students are undoubtedly the biggest asset to the institute. Various activities are organized in IIT-Gymkhana by the students, right from the scratch. Kashiyatra, the annual cultural festival of the institute attracts, although not much, but still ample crowd from universities across India, to witness the awesome display of talent by the IIT (BHU) student fraternity inspired the lifestyle of the Holy City. Various clubs like Western / Indian Music Club, Cine Club, Literary Club etc function at full potential within the Gymkhana. Spacious grounds and fields provide voluptuous opportunities for sports like Cricket & Football. Other sports like Badminton, Tennis are played with equal participation and enthusiasm. Besides, the institute has a well furnished Technology Business Incubator for budding entrepreneurs within the institute. IIT (BHU) students can boast of one of the best campus life one can ever get in an Indian university. The city in itself is amazingly vivid in the terms of its culture. Although dirty, chaotic and crowded, one's heart clings to this city and yearns for more of it. Initially, people find it hard to adjust to the conditions in the campus (which is far more cleaner than the rest of the city) and Varanasi. However, in due course of time the mystical intricacies of the city cast a spell on our senses and one falls in love with the same crowded streets, narrow gullies, the nocturnal deafening & deadly silence in the ghats(which teem with life during the arti in the evening), the distant chiming of the temple bells, the psychedelic concerts by stoned foreigners, the delicacies of roadside chat and what not. The campus turns into an infinitely silent and beautiful abode in the night and you feel like to roam the lonely roads on and on. The hostels are designed in a very traditional manner - a manner which promotes socializing. Unlike many hostels in other IITs, every room has gardens facing it. Waking up to find lush greenery in front of your door refreshes your senses. In winters, these gardens are the best place to lie down and absorb loads of warmth and vitamin-D from the sun. The hostel dining facility, managed by Maharajas, provides a wide array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, served directly at your plate. Although not the food (maybe), but the feel of catering is homely. These people will serve you anything(in their capacity) on your demand. The academics aren't as hectic as other IITs and hence students get to explore various other opportunities besides engineering. Many enroll in Diploma courses in foreign languages while others prepare for several other entrance examinations. The only drawback here is the absence of 24*7 canteen / shop. All the shops / eateries close down by 7 - 8 pm, with the exception of hostel canteens. The latter are unable to fulfill all the needs of students. Placements and Training: 4.5 / 5.0 IIT (BHU) Varanasi stands among the top engineering institutes in India when it comes to placement. The placement rate has consistently been more than 100%. Best companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, L&T, Tata Steel, Reliance, Infosys etc visit the campus and recruit candidates every year. The average CTC package varies for different branches, but is pretty decent. Due to lesser amount of academic workload many people also prepare for and qualify other competitive exams like UPSC, CAT, GRE etc. All in all, IIT (BHU) is reputed in terms of recruitment and will definitely gain popularity among other good companies which recruit from other IITs, after its recent conversion. Thus my rating would be 3.5 / 5.0.

IIT BHU is one of the part of BHU itself. IIT BHU has oldest infrastructure among all IITs. Here in particular in civil department, some professors are good in teaching, but very strict about attendance and they have high nos. of passing criteria.IIT BHU collage life is some times hacktik, but very enjoyable. Student visit to Ghats for hangouts and finding peace and Hostels are not so good. Rooms are so small and each rooms occupied by 2 student. Internet facility is for 24 hours. But 4 GB net per day aloud to use. Here Placement and industury exposure is kind of okk-okk with respect to other branches.

Campus is very beautiful and very large ( 1400 acres). The rules are not very strict so you go out at the middle of the night and roam around inside or outside the campus.Labs are well equipped and are also being continuously developed. All kinds of sports facilities are available including basketball, tennis, swimming etc.You can have your own bike or scooter in campus which is not allowed in any other IIT .The quality of faculty, again with the exception of few, is bordering on the line between average and below average. The placement rate has consistently been more than 100%. IIT BHU : " MAKE YOUR DREAM A REALITY"

Batch of 2016 | B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering
I love my college in terms of facilities and services provided. It ranked 14th among 'Top 100 Engineering Institutes for Research and Teaching' in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (MHRD) in 2016. The college provides opportunity to interact with Internationally renowned faculty and researchers at various workshops and conferences organized at the campus. INFRASTRUCTURE: CAMPUS: Campus is very beautiful with lots of greenery. Second largest campus in India 1400 acres. Plus you would live in a city , so malls and cinema halls are there. The rules are not very strict so you go out at the middle of the night and roam around inside or outside the campus. The ghats are a great place to visit. LIBRARY : A brand new 2 story library has been constructed which is air conditioned with very comfortable reading rooms.Plus you can use the BHU library which is one of the largest libraries in India. FACULTY: The faculties at IIT-BHU are highly qualified, holding Ph.D. from eminent universities all over the globe. The faculties are independent enough to update the course curriculum keeping in pace with recent developments. HOSTELS: The hostels are designed in a very traditional manner - a manner which promotes socializing. INTERNET: Internet facilities are good, now they are going to be even better with all filters removed and no limit for usage of internet.(The current limit is 4GB/day). PLACEMENTS: IT (BHU) Varanasi stands among the top engineering institutes in India when it comes to placement. COLLABORATIONS: 1.With Industries: The department aims at collaborating with leading industries to facilitate R&D activities on campus and one of the collaboration is with Moser Baer India. 2.With Universities (Indian/Foreign): Well the attractive thing about the department is that they have collaborated with University of Houston facilitating student and faculty exchange programme. I think i was fortunate enough that i got this college for pursuing my B.Tech. I really had a great experience here and enjoyed fullest.

Except the infrastructure everything is excellent , here in IIT(BHU) . All other activities regarding sports, cultural and technical activities are quite frequent for all of us to participate in. Placements are tremendous and are increasing every year as far as the no. of placements per year are concerned. Now public sector is also coming in IIT's for placements. Hostels are quite good , here actually we all make the hostels a place to live in fun, joy and happiness.

IIT-BHU has an excellent architecture, with 16 hostels including two for girls, excellent labs. This college is a hub for the corporate companies as the college talent itself attracts them. What made my college life so enjoyable is the freedom it provides, the freedom i needed. All the possible facilities are there in the hostels, even the mess food is finger licking. College professors is a point which no student is proud of, being such an old university, our professors are not that skilled. below average i would say. College crowd is awesome.

Pharmacy from Bhu is like a dream comes true for me. faculty of pharmacy has a high ranking towards education. it is a hub of an education which fulfill all the requirement and gives the perfect platform to enhance our education. The campus of Bhu is one of the finest one and environment-friendly. Placement cell is very co-operative with us and recent placement record was the inspiration for us.

You would surely get to know -SAB LIGHT HAI.

The infrastructure is just awesome I have ever seen.Faculty, placements are also fine. When a student takes admission here and initially he is very excited to study so he go to classes and take a seat on the first bench. But after a few classes held he changes his mind and sits on the last bench. A student who wakes up early in the morning and sleeps early at night now wake up late and sleep late. A student who used to do things or something like homework at the very first beginning now does at very last. He comes to know how to manage time efficiently. So you can imagine how he is been transformed. There are a lot of things to know and experience here. And finally I must say "ek baar iit me aake to dekho, toofan ko hotho se lagake to dekho, dil se ek hi awaaz nikalegi ki SAB LIGHT HAI "

IIT BHU is very old college but named as IIT in 2012 .Having huge placement from many years.our alumni are already everywhere in very reputed position, having huge scope for higher study or competitive exams like UPSC,cat etc . Gymkhana needs to improve a lot in sports&other facilities. Infrastructure needs to improve, in , swimming pool , badminton Hall shares with BHU .every hostel &department have LAN facilities. An evening of ghats&kashi Vishwanath temple is too good. Classes r boring ,having excellent hostel life with friends, mess food is average , of your helpful seniors ,mass bunk.iit has very worst ratio of girls but increased by BHU girls. Life in IIT BHU too good. everybody has very good career after graduating from this college .must come in this college Kuki yaha SAB LIGHT HAI.

All the buildings were made a long time ago. The buildings are sturdy and have adequate facilities. There should be more of practical study and less of theoretical study. A number of different experiences and a group of amazing friends made my college life awesome! The hostels are large and very beautiful. There are all kinds of sports activities that one can participate in. The fees in my college are normal, less than that of any private college, and the mess fees are also nominal. Also scholarship facility is provided to students who need it.

The college experience till now has been really very good. The exposure I got in my first year not only in the field of academics and technology but also in the cultural field was really very good. Regarding the academics the teaching pattern followed is good. In my experience, students learn a lot from the external.workshops conducted by the various college clubs rather than classrooms. A large number of opportunities are available for all the students to showcase their talent. Ranging from sports to tech to cultural there are a number of events conducted round the year. Regarding the placements, IIT BHU had a good placement record with a large alumni network which also is a plus point being the oldest standing institution in India. Overall the institute has good infrastructure to help students excel in any field they desire.

We do have one of the best infrastructures, spreading across over 1000 acres, apart from the eco-friendly environment we have one of the finest medical institutes of our country ie Institute of Medical Studies. Though we definitely need improvement in pavements and roads in some of the areas of our college. Our college has a hardworking team who keep on contacting companies across the globe, so the corporate exposure is perfect. you get to interact with people across a different section of the country, getting exposure to different "India". Hostel certainly needs a lot of improvement. First of all, I hate all those yellow walls around me :D. Internet was good but it sucks nowadays. The rooms are pretty much congested. Rest is fine. We need a 24*7 library.About the profs trust me every prof sucks. And about the affordability, I would say my college 'was' affordable.

Life in IIT BHU is the best platform to achieve everything

Being the department rank 1, I secured my life's greatest opportunity to travel Europe for a research project in summer of 2016. The life in IIT BHU is not easy but the struggles have made each and every student achieve excellence in their field. The placements have seen great developments in past years due to support from alumni and great teamwork from current members. Among the college fests, Kashi yatra the annual cultural fest gave the best exposure to me as a performing on stage in 2015. The crowd gathering in all the events has been exceptional. The infrastructure has been an issue but is improving every year. Although a much needs to be done but I would say that in the last three years, this institute has been delivering some great students to the nation and will keep serving the nation to full capacity.

IIT BHU - the jewel of the nation

Posted on 15 Feb' 16 by ABHAY RAGHAV
Batch of 2019
It has been about one year since I joined this college, and it has probably been the finest decisions, I have ever made in my life. The institute which combines the status of IIT and legacy of BHU needs no introduction.being among the best minds means a lot to everyone and in IIT BHU both faculty and students have a sound knowledge of their respective fields and most are helpful and cooperative. The administration is simplified and student friendly. We get immense exposure of industrial and corporate world during various fests, workshops and guest lectures. Being on BHU campus, we also get to interact with students of other faculties and colleges.College life is just awesome and besides academics, one can excel in almost any field of interest as there are many people around who have excelled in various fields of academics, research, finance, cultural activities and sports. infrastructure is not at par with other IIT but a lot of construction and renovation is going on currently and things are going to be much better.coming to placements because of its glorious legacy and extensive alumni network, the placements of the institute are among the best in the nation. In a nutshell, as I have stated it is an abode of excellence and a jewel of the nation. I m personally a member of numerous clubs of college,I have helped organize departmental fests, invite sponsors, interacted with various other students in different colleges of BHU, my time here has been very well up to know and i do feel both happy and honored to be a part of this institution.

Currently it lacks good quality professors due to corruption and interference by BHU for too long. But I am seeing the quality of education and infrastructure growing on my own, and it is not a college which someone will want to miss. The college is in the state of transition currently and would be a lot better within 5 years. Also, I have visited other IITs and IIMs, but the beauty of BHU campus is much better.

The first thing that comes to mind is the freedom you enjoy when you are there. I feel, I'm never gonna be free again. You get to stay and get exposed to one of the oldest living city in the world- Varanasi- not a metro but a city with its own pace of life and very rich in traditional and culturally rich city in some aspects which you can appreciate only if you spend some time to explore it. Trust me- you will appreciate it much more after you have passed out and spent some time in a metro- some very good things to appreciate about Varanasi-Kashi- Benaras

The college has been instrumental in shaping me the person I am today. From proper theory classes to practical in labs, from debates to tycondo, the college gave me everything. The faculty is good and professors are always ready to help you. Hostel life also helped me learn a lot. We learned the importance of group studies. Living through and enjoying even the last morsel of food, to the late night Maggi. Moreover it will be incomplete without our friends. It was they who stood by us in everything. Helped us complete our assignments, make up for our classes and so on. Beyond studies, the college had all the other charms as well. One could find people playing all types of sports in the campus. Be it, basketball, tennis, football, volleyball, tycondo, judo, swimming, and so on. And this was not all. Most of the hostels had their own gym and volleyball or badminton court also. Besides theatre, dance and music were also given equal importance.

B.H.U. - Life Lives Here

My experience at IIT (BHU) had been no less than a roller coaster ride, with the depressions always yielding to something great in coming semesters. To start with the academics, I had been in the Metallurgical Engineering department (often touted as the mecca of metallurgy) which boasts of having the best faculty and the highest number of patents in the field of metallurgy across Indian universities. The course structure and coverage does enable one to easily procure top ranks in the GATE examination. To speak of extracurricular activities the IIT the gymkhana is the place to be. Add to it the serenity of the ghats of Benaras, does make it the place to be at.

Well!! The college life is excellent with hostel life and extracurricular at its best. A lot of cultural, sports and other activities goes around the year which can keep one engaged and fully active. Kashi yatra, Technex and Spardha being major attractions. Faculty wise it still needs some improvement with better lab facilities and mentors to guide you. Hopefully with it being declared an IIT, things have improved down the line. Though the students give their everything to sports and various extracurricular activities, investment into these areas are also needed so that funds can be better utilized for betterment.
