    National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar is a government engineering institute. It was formed in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College, and in 2002, it was granted the status of NIT. The vision of the institute is to establish a unique identity by developing high-quality human and knowledge resources in the field of technology. The mission of NIT Silchar is to train young individuals and transform them into responsible engineers, scientists and technologists and inspire them to work towards the betterment of society. National Institute of Technology Silchar ranked 48th under the engineering category in the NIRF 2021 Ranking. In the NIRF Rankings of 2021, the institute has been ranked 93rd in the overall category.

    NIT Silchar offers several undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various specialisations. There are a total of 11 departments – Engineering (6), Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management Studies. Each of these departments has a dedicated list of faculties. Each department undertakes several projects. The faculty members are involved in research in different areas of their subjects, which is funded partly by the institute and mostly by the funding agencies.

    National Institute of Technology Silchar is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi Road, 8kms away from the southern outskirts of Silchar town in Assam. It is well-connected with various cities through roads and railways. The nearest bus station is ISBT Silchar, from where you can pick an auto to reach the NIT Campus. The distance of the Silchar railway station from the campus is around 10 km. There are direct flights to Silchar from major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Imphal and Guwahati.     Clubs, Committees and Societies

    Gyansagar – Gyansagar is a social service initiative undertaken by the students of the institute. It works towards the development of society in terms of education, health awareness, job opportunities, etc. 

    Gymkhana Union Body – It is the official body to look after overall students’ activity at the institute. It has three major divisions – sports committee, cultural committee and hostel affairs committee. 

    Computer Science Society – It organises various activities like seminars, debates, quizzes and software contests for the professional and academic development of the students. 

    Electronics and Communication Society – The E&T department has an active society called “Electronics Society” that promotes technical activities among the students.

    Electra – The society guides students to participate in activities like technical seminars and debates in the field of electrical engineering.

    Civil Engineering Society – It organises interactive activities for the professional development of the students.

    Mechanical Engineering Society – It is involved in active consultancy work to develop and utilise the resources of Northeast India.

    NIT Silchar Infrastructure and Facilities

    NIT Silchar has separate boys and girls’ hostel with basic amenities like a mess, attached washrooms, etc. The health centre on the campus offers allopathic, homeopathic and dental treatments to the students, faculty and staff members. The central library at NIT Silchar has a wide range of knowledge resources related to Technology, Science, Humanities, Management, Social Sciences, and other allied subjects. There is a guest house on the campus well-equipped with all modern facilities.  

    National Institute of Technology Silchar has a large playground on the campus where students can play various sports like cricket, hockey, football, etc. NIT Silchar has a sub-post office within the campus that provides regular facilities, such as registration, money order and speed post. The institute shopping centre has provisional stores, fax centres, book shops and PCOs for students' and staff members’ convenience.     NIT Silchar Scholarships

    NIT Silchar awards various scholarships to deserving candidates offered by the state government, central government and charitable organisations. Here is a list of various NIT Silchar scholarships 

    • Bharti Infratel Scholarship Programme – It is offered to students with disabilities pursuing education in government recognised institutes in Northeast India.
    • Government of Maharashtra State Scholarship – The scholarship is offered to students of the SC category who are residents of Maharashtra, and whose family income is not more than 6lpa.
    • Hakim Abdul Hameed Scholarship - The students of SC/ST/OBC/Minority categories who have cleared 10+2 with at least 50% marks can apply for the scholarship.

    NIT Silchar has a Training and Placement Cell that facilitates training and placement stages and is supervised by a T&C Officer. The cell is well-equipped with placement excellent infrastructure and facilities, such as an auditorium for seminars and pre-placement talks, fully furnished rooms for GD & PI, a computerized office and a computer lab for conducting online tests.     National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar placement cell facilitates training and placement and works towards the overall development of students. It operates under the supervision of the Training and Placement Officer and mainly works as a coordinator between the institute and industries.     Courses offered by NIT Silchar

    National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar admissions to all undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses are made based on qualifying examination, a valid score in the entrance test followed by a counselling session. NIT Silchar offers admission to five academic programmes – B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, M.B.A and Ph.D in various disciplines. The UG, PG and Ph.D courses are mainly offered in engineering branches, management disciplines, basic sciences and humanities field. 

    The NIT Silchar admission to the B.Tech course is made through JoSAA on the basis of the score in JEE Main. For admission to the M.Tech course, candidates have to qualify GATE and participate in CCMT counselling. The NIT Silchar admission to the M.B.A programme is given based on the score in the entrance exam, followed by GD and PI. For the M.Sc. programme, admission is made through CCMN counselling based on the JAM score.     College ifrastructure is well equiped with all the facilities required for students. There are 10 boys hostel and 3 girls hostel (+ 1 Girls hostel is under consideration foe construction). Every hostel have there individual mess and the food served are good. Mess manu include a variety of foods from different parts of India. Hostels have single/double/triple seater rooms and there is LAN port for each student with high speed internet connectivity round the clock. Sports facility is also good.

    2. NIT Jalandhar- start from 3lakhs and can go up to 22lakhs.
    3. NIT Jamshedpur the median salary packages approx 7.5 lakhs.
    4. NIT Bhopal the medium salary package starts from 8 lakhs but the infrastructure is not to good according to the students.
