National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar is a government engineering institute. It was formed in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College, and in 2002, it was granted the status of NIT. The vision of the institute is to establish a unique identity by developing high-quality human and knowledge resources in the field of technology. The mission of NIT Silchar is to train young individuals and transform them into responsible engineers, scientists and technologists and inspire them to work towards the betterment of society. Gyansagar – Gyansagar is a social service initiative undertaken by the students of the institute. It works towards the development of society in terms of education, health awareness, job opportunities, etc.
Gymkhana Union Body – It is the official body to look after overall students’ activity at the institute. It has three major divisions – sports committee, cultural committee and hostel affairs committee.

College ifrastructure is well equiped with all the facilities required for students. There are 10 boys hostel and 3 girls hostel (+ 1 Girls hostel is under consideration foe construction). Every hostel have there individual mess and the food served are good. Mess manu include a variety of foods from different parts of India. Hostels have single/double/triple seater rooms and there is LAN port for each student with high speed internet connectivity round the clock. Sports facility is also good.
College infrastructure is quite good with ample number of classrooms and all facilities such as gyms, sports courts, badminton courts. The laboratories are well equipped with all the necessary equipment and all hostels have round the clock LAN connection which can be accessed using the college proxy.
Wonderful Buildings. Well designed ACADEMIC BUILDINGS. A Lush green environment with more than 20 lakes within the campus only. Computer Labs are aur conditioned. Classes are super clean and sanitized. NIT Silchar stood 6th in India in Environment friendly campus.
