ESE stands for Engineering Services Examination which is conducted every year by UPSC. ESE is a national-level exam which is organised to recruit candidates for Group A/B services and posts in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. According to the eligibility criteria of UPSC ESE , candidates whose age fall between 21 years to 30 years and those who have a B.Tech degree can apply for the exam.
Post qualifying the exam, candidates are recruited as engineers in various departments/ministries of the Government of India.

Indian Engineering Services comprise of engineers who work under the government of India and designated as Class 1 officer. They administer a large segment of the public sector economy, which constitutes of Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water engineering, Defense service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service, etc.

A combined three-stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. IES remain the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India.
