A defense business headquartered in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu is named Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT), sometimes known as Ordnance Factory Trichy. It is one of the 41 Indian Ordnance Factories that the Indian Ministry of Defence's Ordnance Factories Board oversees. Indira Gandhi, India's prime minister at the time, officially inaugurated it on July 3, 1966, and work on it started in 1967. It was created to help the Small Guns Factory in Kanpur and the Rifle Factory in Ishapore to produce more small arms for the nation. After the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, there was more need. It began making 9 mm carbines and is currently producing weapons in a variety of calibers. 315-bore rifles, high caliber shell launchers, grenade launchers, aviation, naval, and tank armament, anti-aircraft guns, automatic rifles, and sniper rifles are all examples of military weaponry. The plant is run solely by an IOFS official with the title of General Manager (ex officio, Additional Secretary to Government of India), who serves as both the chief executive officer and the primary judicial authority.
