What is the full form of CD-R?

The CD-R in full form is compact disc recordable. A compact disc recordable (CD-R) is a rewritable disc that the user can write once and read many times. Once done, the CD-R disc cannot be formatted and the data cannot be deleted. A writable CD is also called CD-Write-Once (CD-WO) or Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM).

    About CD-R:

The first CD-R was released in 1988 by Sony and Philips. Since data once recorded on a CD-R disc cannot be erased, data cannot be corrected if it is written incorrectly. Do not confuse it with CD-RW, which can be changed after burning is complete.

CD-R discs use photosensitive organic dyes to record information. The CD-R is made with a polycarbonate plastic backing. A typical CD-R disc can hold 650 MB of data or 74 minutes of music.

    How does the CD-R work?

CD-R discs are coated with a photosensitive organic dye to allow users to record information on them. The burning process begins when you insert a CD-R disc into your computer. A laser inside the drive heats the dye, exposing the light-scattering areas, like a conventional CD hole. CD-R drives do not insert CDs. Instead, the recorder creates reflective patches on the CD, which the computer's CD laser interprets as pits. Once the CD-R is burned, the disc can be used in a standard CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive. Original DVD drives had problems reading CD-R discs, but newer drives no longer have that problem.

    Advantages of CD-R:

    • Low cost

    • It can be read by any CD player.

    The disadvantage of CD-R:

    • CD-R search time is slow.

    • Data degrades over time.

    • Data cannot be written back to the CD-R.
