FBD means free body diagram. This is called a free body diagram because FBD is not associated with the environment. A free body diagram is the type of model that explains the effect of forces on any object. These are given by scientist Sir Isaac Newton. This explains the second law of motion. This second law of Sir Isaac Newton shows the relationship between object mass and force. For acceleration of an object, external force is necessary for that object. Two types of vector used in free body diagrams, First north vector and second vector is south vector. One vector is in the positive direction, and one vector is in the negative direction. This vector applies forces to the object. When force is the same at that time, the force value is canceled.

Use Of Free Body Diagram

  • It is used to calculate and visualize the force
  • It helps to develops equation
  • Helps to solve problems of mechanics
  • It helps to determine the structure of an individual components
  • It helps to visualize moments and results of an object obtained due to application of free body diagram
  • Free body diagrams help to understand other topics such as statistics, dynamics and mechanics.

Feature Of Body Diagram

  • Free body diagram is the diagrammatic representation that helps in delivery problem solutions.
  • Generally, free body diagrams use simple structures for example, Box, Triangle, Round etc.
  • In Physics, forces and their directions are shown by the representation of an arrow.

Purpose Of Body Diagram

  • We can use free body diagrams as a tool to understand concepts of physics.
  • We can use free body diagrams as a tool to visualize the concepts.
  • We can use free body diagrams as a tool to calculate the resulting reaction.
  • We can use free body diagrams as a tool to solve the mechanism of the problems.

How To Make Body Diagram

By following the below steps we can make a free body diagram.

  1. Identification of contact forces present on the body. And draw the outline of the subject with a dotted line.
  2. Drawing of dots for the preparation of objects
  3. Construction of coordinate system And label the directions.
  4. After that, draw contact forces with the help of an arrow, Which indicates applied force on the object.
  5. Now, label all the forces applied on the body.

If acceleration is available, then also draw an acceleration vector.

Common Mistakes Happen During Making A Free Body Diagram:-

Following some mistakes, we do not make a free body diagram construction.

Avoid such a type of force which is also acting on other objects.

We have to properly mention the direction of forces. For example,

  1. The direction of weight always song down side
  2. The friction always present parallel to the attached surface of the object
  3. The direction of normal force is perpendicular to the attached surface.
