What is the full form of INMO?

INMO can be expanded as the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. It is an Indian math competition conducted annually since 1989 by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the tutelage of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM). The INMO exam draws the attention of thousands of students across the country, but only 30 are chosen. Following the exam, the selected candidates are trained at the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC), and six of the best candidates are chosen to represent our country at the international level. The Mathematical Olympiad Program is a six-stage procedure run by the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM). The Mathematics Teachers' Association is in charge of the first stage of PRMO (India). HBCSE organises the remaining phases.

Stages of the mathematical olympiad program

• Stage 1: Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO)

• Stage 2: Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)

• Stage 3: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)

• Stage 4: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)

• Stage 5: Pre-Departure Camp (PDC)

• Stage 6: International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

Eligibility criteria

• To be eligible for INMO, a candidate has to appear in the Regional Math Olympiad of their state or zone.

• In each area, a maximum of 28 students from grades 8, 9, 10, and 11, and a maximum of 6 students from grade 12, are selected to take part in the INMO.

• In addition, five extra girls are chosen (from grades 8, 9, 10, and 11), apart from the applicants from each region.

INMO 2022 exam pattern

The INMO exam is four hours long and consists of six tough questions. The question paper is worth 102 points, and each of the six questions is worth the same number of points. The six problems are from the areas of number theory, algebra, combinatorics and geometry.

All questions must be responded on the response script, which needs to be returned at the end of the exam, together with the rough sheets. The INMO test problems are exceedingly complex, and the difficulty level increases with each phase of the Math Olympiad curriculum.
